Newport News, VA to Niagara Falls, NY

We are a young senior couple planning a road trip from Newport News, VA to Niagara Falls, NY, in late July.  We're newly retired and are looking forward to a more leisurely drive exploring smaller but special points of interest, along the way.   We have reserved a timeshare in Hershey, PA, with plans to use it as a half way stop, roundtrip.

On our first day, we plan to tour Gettysburg National Park, before heading to Hershey for a night or two.   While we're not opposed to spending some time in the Pennsylvania Amish area (we've done that a few times, years ago) we very much would like to find some other points of interest, within an hour's drive of the Hershey area.  Are any of the factory tours near York, PA worth the time?

On the way to the falls we will stop in Corning, NY and tour the factory/museum.  We plan to spend three nights in Niagara Falls, which will give us two full days to explore both the American and Canadian sides of the falls.    At this time we have no particular plans for stops, on the return drive, but are looking for something to see and do, to break up the drive and stretch our legs.  We'll return to the Hershey timeshare,  for at least one night, before driving back home.

Our plan allows for some flexibility, so an overnight stop between Hershey and Niagara Falls, for the right attraction, can be easily done.  We're especially interested in history, museums and local culture (i.e. cheese tasting in Wisconsin).  We are looking for suggestions of other attractions along our entire route, and don't mind altering the route some, for something special.   Also, any suggestions for good non-chain restaurants, along the full trip, will be appreciated, especially lunch in Corning.  We like casual, but not necessarily cheap places and enjoy a variety of cuisines.

Thank you in advance, for any and all suggestions and information.  HAPPY NEW YEAR.

The Finger Lakes region of NY state is rich with history... from Hershey, consider heading to Watkins Glen at the southern end of the lakes and exploring the charm of the wine region... after driving north along the lakes, head to historic Rt 20, through the various towns and villages... Seneca Falls is noted as the model town from "Its a Wonderful Life" and the area is the birthplace of the Womens movement in America...

Not far from the Lakes is Cooperstown, the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame...

There are dozens of attractions and stops in the region, great mansion hotels near Geneva, antiques, fine restaurants, lake boat tours and amazing scenery... just google Finger Lakes...

The factory in Corning is no more, but the museum is worth a visit.

You might consider a stop in Rochester, where you can visit the Eastman house/museum where there are often excellent photography exhibits.

Susan B. Anthony's house is in Rochester too,

Seneca Falls has the Women's Rights National Park, well worth a visit, and there are several sites to see there.

Niagara on the Lake in Canada has the Shaw Festival and other theater in the summer.

be sure to have the proper documents to cross the border into Canada.

What you need to know about the Corning Museum of Glass.

In Tioga County PA west of Wellsboro is the deep Pine Creek Gorge. My high school history teacher coined the name Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon.

I know there's a factory tour of the Harley-Davidson plant in York but haven't taken it myself. (Signed Birdie up in Williamsburg.)
