Newport News Area Beaches
Thank you in advance for the help...
We are a Midwestern family (DH, DS-10, DD-14 and myself) planning a 10-day vacation to the Williamsburg/Newport News area in mid-May. Although we will be doing many of the traditional Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Monticello-type things, we'd also like to experience some quieter activities. I thought that we may enjoy the beach, but having grown up in Clearwater, FL, I tend to be a bit jaded. What we are looking for is a quiet, mostly locals beach... Not interested in Va Beach at all. Can you help steer us in the right direction, please?

Kasmir,
I'm not a big fan of Virginia Beach (the developed beach front) either but there are a couple of other options in that area. First Landing State Park is a very pretty place and has a swimming beach. If you do visit that area, definitely consider a visit to the Virginia Marine Science Museum. It's a fascinating place and the kids would like one of their dolphin watch boat trips.
The eastern shore of Virginia has some possibilities. Investigate Kiptopeke State Park which has a beach fronting the Chesapeake Bay and is also a great place for hiking, biking and bird watching. There's more info about Kiptopeke and Va's other state parks at this url: www.virginiaoutdoors.com/html/body_state_parks.htm.
And of course, there's always the Outer Banks. It (like Chincoteague) would be a long day trip but you all are going to be in the area long enough to do an overnighter or a couple of days away.
The weather in May ought to be beautiful but it might not be warm enough for swimming. Air temps could be anywhere from the 60s to the 80s.
Hope you have a great time!
