NEWPORT LOCALS, HELP PLEASE!
Going to Newport for the US Open WEd and Thurs. Where is a good place (not too pricey but not divey either) to eat Wed night. And where are some nice shopping areas, not malls of course that I can take my 84yr old mom, she's done the mansions on Wed afternoon? Or any other suggestions, we'll be there WEd. at 2:00pm

Try shopping along Bellevue Ave near the Tennis Hall of Fame (several good shops in the area). There are 2 good restaurants there. La Forge which has views overlooking the Tennis Hall of Fame (it's a "Pub Fare", i.e. not pricey, type of restaurant) and Annies (not sure if open for dinner, great breakfast place).
Thames Street, of course, has many shops and restaurants but will entail walking a bit.

I love Salas', especially the New England Clamboil with Maine lobster! It also has Italian food.
The Brick Alley Pub is also a good, casual restaurant. You can do a little shopping across the street at the Brick Marketplace.
Down on the Wharf area, the Mooring and Black Pearl are also good.

Good suggestions. I guess we should ask how mobile your Mom is, as some of these places do have stairs or you will need to walk a distance to get to.
Also, I'm guessing the wait to get into these places will be intense during the US Open.
Does the op mind waiting? Most resturants in Newport do not take reservations for under 6 people.
* Anyone know if there's truth to the rumor that Sala's may be closing? Hope not.

Salas closing? say it an't so! I have been eating there for 35 years, and every trip back to Newport (about twice a year) I stop in for either a single boiled lobster, or if I am really hungry, the clam boil. I would sure miss it!
