We will be staying in NYC for 5 nights and do not want to spend more than $300.00 a night (tax included). And we would like to be close to restaurants, attractions, etc, etc. Can anyone tell me their recommendations of if they know of any of the following hotels? We were given numerous choices and now need to decide:

Inn at Irving Place
W at Times Square
Morgan on Madison
Casablanca hotel off Times Square
Iroquois
Bryant park Hotel
Mansfield
Surrey on e 76th
Michaelangelo
Mayflower
Mansfield
Plaza

If you know of any of these hotels, I would so appreciate your advice or comments, and thank you so very much!

I was glad to see the Mansfield on your list. We stayed there last month and it was lovely! Immaculate room, marble bathroom, comfortable bed, free champagne on arrival, tea and coffee always available in the lounge (and newspapers, Time Out etc), and the staff were very friendly and professional. Breakfast wasn't included, but was good at $10/12. The whole place has a lovely old-world atmosphere but feels very up to date!

On the downside, our room was rather small and had hardly any daylight, looking out on to a small well, but as we were mostly there during the hours of darkness, we didn't find it a problem.

Try the Sofitel on 44th St - it was totally great - we had a wonderful time there! (read the reviews on this website under rants and raves)

When are you planning on going? I think there are a few hotels on your list that are out of your price range, unless you are going in the very low season and can get a good deal. The Inn at Irving is $325 (pre tax) through the holidays at least, and the Plaza is more like $400-$500. January and February should get some better deals though!

All Hyatts are having a promo called "Holidays on Sale" from November 22 through December 30th. The rates are 50% or more off. I think there are 3 in the city, including the Stanhope Park Hyatt which is a wonderful hotel in a great neighborhood. We just stayed there in October and if you can get a good deal, is well worth it.

Which is a better pick, the Stanhope Park Hyatt Hotel or the Le Parker Meridien Hotel for 7 nights?

No comparison--stay at the Stanhope.

If you are only in town for museums, the Stanhope. For other things I think the Upper East Side is a bit quiet (at night) and a little removed. I'd go with Le Parker Meridian. It is an oasis in the middle of Midtown.

We enjoyed our stay at the Michelangelo a couple months ago. It's a smaller hotel, but with larger than average rooms, complimentary continental breakfasts, and a great location; Times Square, Fifth Avenue shopping, and Central Park are all an easy walk.

For $260 plus tax we stayed in a junior suite with two bathrooms, large bedroom, and nicely appointed sitting room.

I agree with Rae! The Sofitel is our new home in NYC. Fantastic room. Can't believe it's not on your list.

Watch how you word things, Beachbum. Your room at Michaelangelo may have been large but that's because you had a junior suite. I once stayed there in the tiniest room I've ever seen in a New York hotel -- and that's going some. So I'd watch the phrasing that they have larger than average rooms -- I'd think that's only if you book a junior suite or better. But it was a nice small hotel -- even though our tiny room looked out to brick wall.

I love the Casablanca. Great location plus all the extras in Rick's Lounge (breakfast, wine and cheese, cookies,etc). Friendly staff. They often have internet specials.
