New York Hotel Nov 8th
I am swamped right now, but just found out I need to get a hotel as I am likely to be going to a very important opening night. It's likely, but not in the bag yet!
I kayaked and everything I know is over $500. Anyone who might have a moment to suggest a $250 to $350 property, I would be much indebted. Of course the show is in TimeSquare, but we're not new to Manhattan so any hood might do.
Hate to ask, but it looks like a night to spend on overpriced mediocre lodging. Would like to find the best solution.
Mahalo for any ideas or suggestions. I will be visiting hotels.com and quickbook and others, but as I am unfamiliar with many of the "affordable - yeah right" choices, any help is good help.
Happy Tuesday!

Thanks gekko - any knowledge of good bids for any hoods?
Aint that always the way with nyc - one week you can land a rathole for 189 the next week it is 349 and still a rathole! Other times you can land some grand dames for 249 and the next week they're 579!

If it's a popular weekend, don't count on Priceline. Priceline is dependant on available inventory and during a busy time there aren't many hotel rooms that aren't booked by traditional methods. That said, try to find something in a price range you can live with and that can be cancelled in case you do win something on Priceline. Do some research on betterbiding.com and biddingfortravel.com before placing a bid so you can learn the ins and outs to get the most from each of your tries. You would want to stick in the 4* categories, or you risk overpaying for as mediocre hotel.
Also try the www.hotelgrandunion.com and www.thepodhotel.com neither are 4* but might offer a decent price in a clean, safe hotel.

Have you tried travelzoo, quickbook and kayak?
The upper west side is also a good area - about 10 mins to Times Square by subway. Beacon has rates that are not bad and the Newton - while very basic, is clean and reliable. Some rooms with shared baths are priced very low.

nytraveler, do you mean quikbook (no "c")? I booked the Park South through them for the 2nd week in October at a better rate than was available through the hotel--I'll post about it when I return (I haven't stayed there before) although of course the OP will need to have booked something before then.
On the Ave on the UWS is a place I like quite a bit although it's gotten pretty expensive lately--but it might be worth looking into (it's probably in the high 300s). It's an easy cab or subway ride to Times Square.

Try Club Quarters for weekend rates. I stayed at the one in Midtown (not Rockefeller Center), and it was perfectly located, clean and very quiet. It's a standard business hotel - but good locations, and typically not the "first choice" for tourists. Good luck! And which opening night are you going to? I'm a huge theater fan!

Hotwire is showing a 4* in midtown south for $275 that COULD be 70 Park or Morgans. But that won't be cancelable. You might consider booking the Park South on quikbook.com for $289 (fully cancelable) and watching Hotwire or try bidding on Priceline.

You guys have been fantastic!!! My friend may be able to get us rooms at the Hilton on trade which would be ideal as it is just one night with an agenda, but will go thru your wonderful ideas and book something as a security.
I really appreciate all the responses. Thank you. If all works out you should get a riprouring 24 hour travel report.

TxTravelPro's list is a good one, the only truly "horrid" property is the Hotel Pennsylvania (it's slated to be closed soon) I would sleep in a box on the street before staying there. The others should be ok if the Hilton doesn't work out.
