Hi everyone..well the shopping trip was a disaster. Coulnd't find anything I was looking for. I leave for Montreal in 10 days. I am still not sure what to do about the shopping day-I have a long black all-weather coat but it may be too warm-going in any out of stores and trying stuff on. Do I wear a sweater underneath and if so, how hot will I be! I have a nice rust hip lenght jacket that I got last year that I could wear with black pants and black t-neck sweater and a nice scarf but will I be warm enough! The jacket is just a blazer type thing. I have a long black skirt and nice blouse with black boots for dinnner. Dont' have a clue about Sunday-what to wear. I assume all stores are open on Sunday.
I really appreciate all the suggestions, help etc.

I say go with the long black all weather coat. Do you have a thin sweater you could wear underneath?

Personally I would be offended if my husband brought home clothes for me to wear because he liked them on other women. Anyway my husband respects my tastes in clothes, never tries to influence me, and always says I look nice. Nor do I try to tell him what to wear either.

Stephanie: I need to know if you are flying or driving. If you are driving, you can bring more than one coat - if flying, it will be more difficult. Let us know the transportation issue.
P.S. I was under the impression the hoopla was this past weekend!

Stephanie, I thought it was last weekend! 10 days from now brings us to the last week in October at which time it cld. be freezing in Montreal! Good thing you bought those boots! You will need something heavier than a blazer!

Have enjoyed reading all the comments regardng your upcoming trip and then some!

I agree it will be colder in late October so wear the warmer black coat.
Black always looks classy and if your
shoes and purse are stylish that will finish the outfit! Sounds like you have your dinner outfit under control so to go with your coat try and find a more stylish pair of black pants, preferrably with a slight flare. When you're shopping you will see mostly what's on the outside anyway.
Good luck and enjoy Montreal!

Stephanie, take a look at your original post on the Canada board. Someone there noted this discussion and mentioned that she (a Montrealer) thinks the people here are making you nuts over nothing, that simple basic clothes will do you very well in Montreal.
This New Yorker happens to agree. Lighten up, Ladies! (and gentlemen).

Interesting discussion, very! Stephanie, you must be all set by now, so have a great time. I'm sure you'll look fabulous, and if you're applying some of the tips, even more so. Give us a full story on all you did and what you wore. Have a fun trip, and take care.

Coco...I'm flying! No..hoopla is yet to come! And yes, I have a light sweater to wear under my black all-weather coat (it's a nice classic coat, honest!).
And just one more question..won't high boots be hot under my pants and won't the mark of them show through tighter flared pants?

Stephanie, Stephanie, a few "flaws" will simply make you all the more alluring. And thank you ever so much for not mentioning panty lines. Do have a wonderful trip, !

Stephanie --forgive me if I've missed some posts & am repeating things ohter people have said:

I vote for the long all-weather black coat, period.

Then -- bring along an attractive shawl or two. If it's warmer than you expect, a shawl on top of a sweater or whatever is fine for any time of day.

If it's cold, a shawl on top of the long coat would look great. Try it Indian style--hang it around your neck with the ends even, i.e. symmetrically, then flip each end across you and over the opposite shoulder.

Here is a good way to go crazy: go to metmuseum.org/store (Metropolitan Museum of Art gift store)

order either L5557A -- $110 -paisely border wool shawl (black)

or L 5562A Paisley vine wool shawl for $68.

-- then freak out about whether or not it will come in time for your trip!!

really both of these are nice, would be good lifetime investments (supposing you liked them!!) & great reassuring travel gear. I actually like the cheaper one better myself.

Stephanie: You can only bring one coat since you're flying. Make it the long black one - that can go from day to night, easily. (A pea coat out to the "dressier" restaurant would not be apropos.) Wear the rust colored blazer under the coat on the plane - you can put the coat in the overhead bin. Wear the outfit you described (blazer/black pants/black t-neck with scarf) for shopping. If it is REALLY cold, add the coat.
I don't recommend the high boots under a pair of pants - like you said - too hot/also a chance of seeing the outline of them under the pants. During the day, either wear a pair of loafers or ankle boots if you have them.
And the outfit you described for dinner is great.
You are done. Go have fun.

Jus wonderin, I seen over 95 posts on this and am I the first real man to post here? Looks to me only females and maybe a few gays. Just wanted to say hi and I was hopin you can answer a question for me! You guys seem to be quite informed on the latest styles. I'm gonna be deer huntin in Wisconsin in December and was wonderin if a double down insulated real tree camo parka with matching hood would be a good choice?

Yes Buck, I think your ensemble would be fine. Make sure you wear one of those hats with the ear flaps that fold down. I hear those are the hot accessory for hunters this season.
