New York city to Yale
I need to go to the Yale Uni. this coming month, I am not from the US and I will be landing in JFK.
What is the best way to get to Yale from New York City? should I rent a car? take the train from Manhattan?or fly?
How reliable and frequent are the trains if it is possible to take the train? do I need to reserve in advance or should I just show up and buy the ticket and get on?
Thanks...

You might try Connecticut Limousine Company, the toll free number is 1(800) 472-LIMO. Believe its about $80 round-trip. You'll need to make a reservation
By train, you'll first need to get to Grand Central Station. Cheapest way is the airport bus. Then take one of multiple trains to New Haven. As its a big commuter route, the trains run fairly frequently. You can buy a ticket once at Grand Central, no need to reserve. You're probably looking at a 2 hour trip, at least. You'll then need a cab once in New Haven.
Really just a question of which is more important, the money or the time.

From Grand Central Station you can take a Metro North Train. The New Haven Line goes directly into New Haven and then you would catch a cab or walk to Yale.
The train usually runs every hour and takes about 2 hours to get to New Haven. You do not need to make reservations, you can show up at Grand Central and buy a ticket and get on. I think the fare is about $11.50 each way.

Put simply, if you're coming directly from JFK to New Haven, I'd use Connecticut Limousine, which are really busses or mini-vans. From Manhattan, as Philip indicated, trains run every hour.
Yale is walkable from either the train station or the limo terminal, but a cab would be preferable. A car is not necessary unless you need to get out of New Haven.
You can email me directly if you have specific questions.

A friend who lives in New Haven takes the train into NYC all the time--it can be faster than any car or limo, depending on traffic, and is very affordable. Not all trains in the U.S. are reliable, bu the ones into NYC generally are, and there is no need to reserve in advance. Not sure about frequency, but check Philip's web site for that. Good luck!
