New York bus system
I am in Conn. on Vacation ans will be travelling into New York city by train. The train will take me into central station. I have walked around the midtown area but I want to see the rest of the city. Can anyone help me out with buses running further downtown to SoHO ans Greenwich. I also want to go to see the Statue of Liberty and have heard the takin the Staten Island Ferry is a good idea. Any comments on this? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Howard's advice about the subway whould be heeded. Buses in Manhattan are usefulprimarily for traveling across town. Traffic conditions during the day in NY often slow buses down to the poiint that it's faster to walk when going cross town (there are a few subways that go cross-town but they're rarely convenient for me). be sure to get the "FunPass" at any Metrocard machine or at the fare booth. It allows unlimited rides for one day and also allows one to transfer to the bus (or from the bus to the subway) for free.

6. The Benefits of Busing--If you want to give your dogs a rest without having to shell out $30 to $40 a head for the canned bus tours jostling each other on the street, for just $1.50 a ride (or the $4 all-day pass) you can get a good look at the landmarks on the M4 Bus, heading up Madison Avenue from East 32nd Street, past Columbia University to the Cloisters (the medieval museum in a reconstructed European monastery) in Manhattan's extreme north, then heading south along Fifth Avenue past the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Transfer for free at 42nd Street to the M42 (east to the United Nations, west past Grand Central Station and the New York Public Library to the Hudson River). The M6, meanwhile, runs down Broadway (Times Square, Soho, City Hall, the financial district, Battery Park). Info: 800/638-7646, 638-7622, www.mta.nyc.ny.us.
