New Years Eve in Chicago

My sister and I are in our 20's and were thinking about visiting Chicago for a few days, including New Years Eve.
Probably dec 12-jan2?
I was just wondering if there was anything special going on during that time anyone knew about? particularly anything good going on for new years eve? we arent really big party people, so it doesnt have to involve drinking or anything like that.
also, where would the best part of the city to stay in be if we were planning on getting around by walking or public transportation?
thanks so much for your help

I replied to this last night, but alas it was not posted. My husband and I went to Chicago for NY's eve last year at the last minute and had a blast. First, we got our hotel on priceline - $79 for the westin next to Water Tower - great rate - great location. We spent a couple of days prior to NY's eve relaxing, going to restaurants etc... If you go to metromix.com it will list all of the parties going on in the city that night - I believe they even rate them. Be warned, however, they are not cheap. We drove to Chicago (live in MI) but parked our car at a brand new, fenced in lot at Midway ($7/day) then took the train back to downtown. We spent NY's eve at the restaurant/bar connected to the westin - nice big bar - lots of fun - good food, though we did not eat there that evening. On NY's day we had reservatons at The Drake for their brunch - very good - very $$$. Make your reservations far in advance, they sell out quickly. We also went shopping - there were some excellent sales going on at the mall next to Water Tower. Hope this helps. I would highly recommend getting your rooms on priceline - we have spent quite a few holidays downtown and it does seem that not alot of others do, hence the great rates! Good Luck! Have Fun! OH - forgot! Navy Pier has fire works if you want to fight the crowds!

Many of the tv and radio stations sponsor big events as well. The House of Blues has a big party with John Mayer and other acts. Another big party with live acts is held at Navy Pier. Check out ticketmaster for tickets and information.

first of all, thank you to everyone for your help
secondly, i realize i got the dates wrong. we will actually be going dec 29 not the 12th.
we like rock music basically
would be very interested in just walking around and sightseeing, going to museums, eating good food, etc. we like all different kinds of food.
we arent really on a tight budget, but we cant spend a crazy amount of money either.
as for new years, a concert maybe? some sort of an event? i'm not really sure honestly.
thank you for all your help and suggestions.

WXRT radio sponsors a rock concert every year on Navy Pier. Go to wxrt.com to get details. The ballroom they use is on the very east end of the pier, a great space for a party with a view of the fireworks.
