New Year in Boston?

Hi,

This is probably too early, but does anyone know what events are on in Boston on Hogmanay( Sorry -that's Scottish for New Year's Eve) as I was thinking of having a weekend in Boston -what was held last year?

I suppose that this year might be different and plans can change but I've been looking at flights and for that weekend they are £200 from London which seem very good.

Thanks in advance

Boston has a "First Night Celebration" on New Years Eve (or at least has had for the past many years). All over the city are cultural and entertainment events. For a blanket admission charge you gain access to all the events. It's really very well done and fun. Noisy and crowded and usually cold. It culminates at Midnight with fireworks on the water front.
Many other cities do this too but I think Boston's is the largest.

Boston was the originator of "First Night". It is a very well done event with so much going on--a really wonderful evening culminating with a huge fireworks display. You will love it, but bring your long-johns--it can be bitter cold.

First Night starts early in the day about noon time. You need to buy a button to get into all of the venues, but many just party on the streets. The button can be purchased at Bostix and Stop and Shop, but there are probably other places that sell it. There's a huge parade and fireworks at midnight. Dress in layers, it's always cold. First Night is a blast and always crowded. Don't miss the ice sculptures on the Common and in Copley Square. Last year there was a "First Day" also, but don't know if there will be one this year.

For more information go to http://www.firstnight.org/

As everyone above has mentioned, be sure to dress for the weather so you'll be comfortable while out and about. Note that many activities are indoors, though, so you won't be outside all day and night...

As other posters have mentioned, Boston has the original, biggest and best First Night in the country.

Since New Year's Eve is on a Monday this year, we can expect the festivities to begin over the weekend. Certainly, Dec. 31 itself will be a day-long, city-wide party, capped off with harborside fireworks at midnight. You'll have a great time!
