Crates are wondeful if used correctly.
We have 2 terriers who choose to sleep in their crates (with the door open) during the day but when we say "bedtime" run to their crates, receive a small treat and then bed down for the night. We lock the crate.
Sometimes during the day - I'm at home - I put them in if they bark at the passersbys and then get so excited that they don't stop barking/howling (don't want to annoy our neighbors) and then let them out when they've calmed down.
We always give them a treat when we put them in the crate, luckily they're run by their stomachs

What an exciting summer it will be for you. Hawaii and a new puppy. I agree that picking up the puppy when you return from vaca. will work out great. Too often breeders want to unload puppies at too young an age. By leaving yours for a few more weeks it will get more training from mom. It will be ideal if there are still other puppies there. Mom and siblings are often the best trainers. They bite back when puppy bites! When you do bring home puppy, continue the socialization training by taking it where there are people such as soccer matches etc.
Make sure you establish your rules first and get the rest of the family on board. Decide where puppy is allowed to go and what is off limits. No biting ever! Sitting to receive meals and no people food. Talk to your vet about how to start brushing puppy's teeth, trimming its nails, and brushing its coat. The sooner you start, the better. Enjoy!
