New Orleans - Need help
Hi. I am planning to visit New Orleans on 12/21. I will be travelling with my wife and will be there for 1 day for business and 1 day for pleasure. I have tentatively booked 2 nights at the Prytania Inns in the garden district. Is this a decent B&B in a decent part of town? From what I have read, it is right on the streetcar line. If this is not a decent place, can you suggest another B&B for under $50. Also, we are looking for a few good eating places with price ranges from $10-20 per person. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. You can either respond here or email me at [email protected]. Thanks for all the help.. Chad

Wow, you found a place for under $50 - keep it! The Garden District is a very nice area, but about 20 minutes or so from the French Quarter, which is where most of the restaurants are. In the price range you mentioned, I like to eat at Remoulade and Petunia's is good. There are literally dozens of great, reasonable places to eat, just walk around the Quarter.

I stayed at the Prytania 3 or 4 years ago and it was fine. Conveniently located and a good price. But, I hesitate to call it a B&B - it is really a small motel. In fact, I don't even remember getting breakfast with the room. I believe there is an old building with rooms decorated with antiques and a new(er) building (which is where I stayed) with generic motel furnishings. The new building was cheaper than the old. Nothing wrong with the new building - just don't expect a quaint, romantic experience.

Try Mother's on the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Poydras for poboys. If you want a great burger and some good drinks, try Port of Call in the 800 block of Esplanade - go early, there's always a wait. If you want cajun/creole, try Old N'awlins Cookery in the 700 block of Conti. I always recommend the Clover Grill for breakfast (great waffles and omelets) or a late night burger - they're open 24 hours - 900 Bourbon Street. The Clover's sister is Poppy's Grill on St. Peter near Pat O'Briens, I think. Don't miss beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde - for breakfast or after dinner treat. I know this is way too many choices, but I tried to give you variety, so whatever mood you are in, you'll have a place to go. Enjoy!
