new orleans hotel and restaurants recommendations?
My boyfrined and I are planning a weekend in NO in early November and are looking for hotel and restaurant recommendations. We are thinking of staying at the Saint Louis and would like to hear from anyone who has stayed there. Any restaurant recommendation on all price ranges would be appreciated. Thanks

We have stayed at the St.Louis many times and absolutely love it. Great location. Nice, quiet, small hotel with a European feel and excellent service. The restaurant within the hotel, Louis XVI is excellent and one of our favorites which I would highly recommend (very pricy). They do have a web site.
Here are a few of our other favorite restaurants:
1. Red Fish Grill - upper Burbon - reasonably priced, good for lunch or dinner (a Brennan's restaurant)
2. Bella Luna - overlooking the Mississippi - very romantic - mostly Italian.
3. Port O'Call - Local beer joint with the best hamburgers in town - far down Bourbon on Esplanade I think.
4. Breakfast at Brennans - fantastic!
5. Mr. B's on Royal - another great Brennan's restaurant!
6. NOLA - in the French Quarter
7. Clover Grill on Bourbon has some great late night food (sandwiches and breakfast items) if you have been out late and need to grab a bite before hitting the sack.
8. Pelican Club - great food (pricy)
9. Crescent City Brew House - great beer and excellent food!
10. Delmonico's - St. Charles Avenue - and Emeril Lagasse restaurant - food is to die for! (pricy)
I could go on and on. If you have any specific type food in mind let me know and I would be happy to make some other suggestions.

I was in NO last month, and the best restaurants we went to were NOLA (make your reservation early!) and Gautreade's. Gautreade's is in the Garden District (the St. Charles St. Trolley goes there) on a side street in a residential area. Great food, and a nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of the quarter. Go early so you can do the walking tour of the Garden District--so many beautiful houses!

Lori,
Kittie again...
The last time I was in NO (two years ago) we (myself and two friends) stayed at the Hotel Chateau Dupre on Decatur near Canal. It is a nice hotel. The hotel is "older" in the French Quarter fashion. It is not noisy at night, but is close to things to do.
Their number is 1-800-285-0620.

You must go to Acme for the best oysters around and reasonable prices too. But honestly, we never had a bad meal while in NO. I can't remember the name of our hotel though. But they were about half a block from Bourbon, reasonably priced, clean, had some charming rooms, and some tacky one. Ours was right between two courtyards. The only problem was that two parrots kept in the courtyard woke us up at 6:30 every morning. If I remember the name I will post again.

Add another vote for NOLA and one for brunch at Court of Two Sisters. Make sure you have reservations for NOLA.
The Bourbon Orleans was nicely located. It's part of the Wyndham chain I believe so its not a quaint hotel but it was nice. If you get a hotel on Bourbon Street, make sure you ask for a room off the street.

As for restaurants, the very best in town are Peristyle, Bayona and Marisol in the Quarter as well as Gautreaux's, Brigstens and the Upperline in Uptown. Make reservations early at these places. For local color in a more informal atmosphere, have a muffaletta at the Napoleon House, gumbo at the Acme (unfortunately, oysters are out of season), and anything at Uglesich's. Also, try nola.com which has a great dining forum where locals rate the fare around town. I'm afraid that places like NOLA, Brennan's, Delmonico's and other hip or touristy places don't quite stack up against many retaurants that are more substance than flash or tradition.

Brunch at the Court of Two Sisters. Get a reservation for about 11:15 am and enjoy both some breakfast food along with the first servings of lunch. Eat small portions and eat slow. Spread your meal over 1-2 hours.
Lunch at the ACME. Raw oysters and Jambalaya!!!
Dinner at Commander's Palace. Try the Turtle soup and do not leave without having the Bread Pudding Soufle! It is to die for!

Used to love Napolean House - very overated now. For local color and great food, don't miss breakfast at Mother's. Most romantic dinner on our last trip was Feelings Cafe. Sounds hoaky, but the food was delicious, the setting divine and the price just right. Take a cab - its not a place to walk to.
