New Orleans and somewhere else, Pensacola perhaps?

My husband and I are considering a trip to New Orleans in early March. He's been there a few times for business, I've never been. I have a week's vacation that I must use up by the end of March but he doesn't want to spend the whole week there. So we were considering maybe 2 nights in Pensacola since he loves the Blue Angels. Is there much to do there besides the Blue Angels and the aviation museum? Other suggestions of places to visit within no more than a 3 to 4 hour drive of New Orleans? We're in our 50's and we like museums and cultural/historical sites. Thanks for any ideas!

I like the Pensacola idea but you might want to consider Natchez, a 3hr drive and an hour past Natchez, Vicksburg. Lots of Cival War history. You could do a search here. We can recommend Monmouth Plantation to stay. It is beautiful and the dining room (reservations only) serves great food! http://monmouthplantation.com/

Funny that you should mention Natchez, I just came across that as I was trolling around. Monmouth Plantation looks wonderful. Thanks for the suggestion.

We just returned from Pensacola and you need to time your visit exactly to see the Blue Angels.
I'd do Natchez. Do you have to return to NOLA for a flight?

Gretchen, we will be flying but we haven't bought tickets yet so we're not locked into anything. I was thinking that we would fly to NOLA and return from there. Do you have another suggestion?

I just took another look at the Blue Angels schedule and it looks like we might be there too early in the month anyway, based on the 2011 schedule. How was Pensacola other than the Blue Angels? Lots to do?

Basically we're just looking for somewhere to go that is warmer than Detroit but has stuff to do.

I would also recommend Natchez &/or even Vicksburg if you have a Civil War interest.

With Natchez and Vicksburg being only an hour apart, you can visit both plus you could take a day and day a little way up the Natchez Trace Parkway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natchez_Trace

Pat,

I live at Pensacola Beach and can tell you that there's more to the Pensacola area than the Aviation Museum. It's a very old city and has lots of things for a history buff to enjoy as well as a surprisingly large cultural/art scene for a place of its size.

Check out this website for more info. It's broken down into handy categories so you can easily zero in on your areas of interest. www.visitpensacola.com

Enjoy New Orleans. If you decide to include Pensacola in your visit I'll be happy to answer any questions I can.
