I can comment a little about hiking in west Texas, but like the other poster, I need a little more information on where you plan to visit.
I have enjoyed day hikes at Big Bend NP, and Guadalupe Mountains NP, if you plan to visit either of those places.

We are hiking in Tucson and Sedona. We only have 2 free days. I am not sure if this gives us enough time to drive into New Mexico. We will be going on vacation in the middle of April. Any suggestions?

For hikes in the 3 to 10 mile range,
Ghost ranch at Abiquiu NW of Espanola offers some great hiking. It was where the painter Georgia O Keefe had her studio for many years. It's now owned by the Presbyterian Church but the facilities are open most of the time for public. There are some nice hikes up to the top of the nearby mesa.
There is some good hiking in Carson national park outside Taos and Taos makes and interesting town to stay in.
