New Hampshire Itinerary
Hi,
we are family of 5 , kids ages are 10 to 16 . gong to visit the area at end of July
starting to build our itinerary to NH area. we are going to spend ~15 days in the area , driving from JFK up to Maine and back to JFK .
we want to spend few days in a Cabin ( near one of the lakes Vs. beach Cabin)
checkout the scenic view and to do few easy tracks ( maybe while we spend time in the Cabin) , visit nice villages , shopping area , National parks , whale , etc.

To rent a cottage, you would have to stay for a week although you might find a small cottage colony that is more like overnight cabins (we stayed in one in Bath ME last summer) but sometimes they don't have cooking facilities. There are a lot of cottages on Lake Winnipesaukee that are right on the main road. I would avoid anything like that esp if it's in the Weirs Beach area (southern part of the lake). The Wolfboro location however is on the quiet side of the lake and you are closer to the mountains for fun activities. Wolfboro is lovely. The kids might like to visit Weirs Beach and the Funspot arcades but you wouldn't want to stay in that high traffic area. There is also a lot of boating traffic on Lake W so Mirror Lake looks like a good alternative. For shopping you could go to North Conway but do you really want to do that on vacation (outlet malls).

AMC has lodging in NH. Not a cabin, but not a traditional hotel....there are 3 in the state:

I would suggest Jackson, NH a quaint village of 800 residents about 6 miles North of North Conway - lots of nearby hiking, the Jackson Falls to view/and enjoy on a hot day, one of the last remaining covered bridges in the state.
We are within 6-8 miles of Attitash & Cranmore which both have "summer adventure" activities for kids 10-16 - mountain coasters, climbing adventures, etc.
10 miles to the Mount Washington Auto Road (home of the world's worst weather) - you can hike up if you like longer hikes (3-4 hours for the Tuckerman's Ravine trail - my brother hiked this when he was 5), drive yourself or take one of their vans - great views and meet Marty the resident cat.
For an easier hike (and water experience) take the kids to Diana's Bath.
The free Weather Discovery Center - Mount Washington Observatory - is worth a visit in N Conway.
Lots of restaurant choices - casual & fine dining. We like the Shannon Door Pub right in Jackson - Irish music & pizza, outdoor deck open in summer. Red Fox in Jackson also a great choice for kids.
North Conway Village has lots of great shops - favorites are Zebs, The Penguin & the 5 & 10 store. The outlets are down the road a bit if you like shopping.
Take a train ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad up through the notch (if the kids are into trains) - you can have lunch on the train - shorter rides to Conway are available.
We are also close to the Mount Washington Hotel - one of the last remaining "Grand Hotels" and a good picnic stop - they also have golf, a spa and canopy tours http://brettonwoods.com/activities/canopy_tour/overview)
A drive over the Kangamangus Highway is a nice day trip from our area (using Bear Notch Road in Bartlett which is only open summers) - lots of hiking trails and water holes. The other side of the Kanc there is Clarks Trading Post (great trained bear shows), The Flume & Polar Caves - all of interest to kids your age.
We also have local theater and other summer activities going on in N Conway...

Jackson looks like a good place to spend 3/4 days in.
Do you have information on other sites, such as Acadia NP ,
Portland , etc.
we are going to be in the area 2 weeks and I want to explore it to the most.

Portland is a great city to explore. Take the mail boat cruise. Visit Portland Light house in the beautiful park south of Portland. Great place for a picnic with a view of Casco Bay.
Take a lighthouse cruise. There is one out of Portland but we've been on one with the Bath Maritime Museum that was wonderful.
Get the map to public conservation areas in the Harpswells (east of Brunswick). There's some great lobster places for lunch. Hiking trails, quiet beach, etc. Get a list of farmers markets. We've enjoyed the ones in Bath, Rockland, and Brunswick. Buy fresh berries and some local yogurt for a healthy snack.
Owls Head Light is a short, easy hike with nice view. Owl's Head Transportation Museum has some wonderful weekend events. One time we saw antique airplanes flying. Hard to believe they could still fly.
When you travel from NH across Maine, if you are near Bangor, visit the Cole Transportation Museum. It's more about work vehicles than fancy classic cars.
Hike or take the auto road up Mt Battie in Camden. View is fantastic. Great place for a picnic. Bring binoculars. Pemaquid Point Lighthouse also has a nice park where you can climb on rocks, picnic, etc.
