New England Vacation

I'm planning on a 2 week driving trip leaving Wisconsin and traveling East and just really doing a loop through the east and up through Canada and home...I don't want to make hotel reservations cause I just want to stay where ever we feel like staying that night. We plan on leaving May 26-June 6. I was just wondering would I have a problem finding a place to stay without a reservation? And what must sees should I not miss? Any ideas would help greatly.....

My relatives from Wisconsin love Cape Cod and the National Seashore. But, do make reservations for Memorial Day weekend....you may find yourself living in your car.

Except for Memorial Day weekend, you shouldn't have a problem. You should get off season rates in some places esp the Maine coast. The bad part is that some activities might not be operating yet. Fields of lupine in bloom are gorgeous in mid-June. NH has a lupine festival in the Franconia area. They are also beautiful in the Searsport ME - Blue Hill peninsula area. During the ME festival we got a map to the prettiest areas. Visit Camden Maine to see the windjammers. Eat lobster outdoors if it's warm enough. Visit Portsmouth NH's Strawbery Banke historic area and take an inland river cruise up the Piscataqua. Don't expect to do any hiking in northern areas where black flies are a problem. Check Yankee magazine's website www.newengland.com for events and suggested routes. We had a wonderful time in northern VT in late June last year. Visit Shelburne Museum. I liked Ausable Chasm in NY better than the Flume in NH. Visit Canterbury Shaker Village in NH. All depends on your interests. Have a great time.

one of the most beautiful places on earth..... the White Mountains of New Hampshire [there and around the Kancamangas Highway...], then cross into Maine and head north [Moose country].... I think this is where god vacations in the summer!

Although we foten vacation on Cape Cod, and the National Seashore is beautiful, I might pass it by for this trip - much of the Cape is very commercialized, will be busy Memorial Day weekend, and it will certainly be too cold to go in the ocean (or even bask on the beach) anywhere in New England in May.

Since I don't know what your specific interests are, I might start in Boston and then head north into NH, Maine (as suggested above).

As far as reservations, I think they would be a good idea for Thurs-Mon of Memorial Dy weekend, and you could be more flexible after that.

If you're planning to visit Boston during that interval, you MUST make reservations yesterday -- that's prime graduation season, and hotel rooms are at a premium.
