We are looking to go to a cabin on a lake somewhere in new england. We want to go somewhere where there is a nice not too busy lake, with some cutesy towns for exploration near by. any suggestions would be helpful. thanks

A cousin of mine has a house in Maine. It is pretty big, so probably better for large families / groups. No, I don't get a finder's fee.

I can't remember the rental agency we used but we got a rustic cottage on Lake Winnisquam in NH. It's much quieter than Lake Winnipesaukee. When you see a picture of the cottage you like, make sure to get details of what the beach is like. Some only have docks, not shallow water. We had a steep steps to the water. It wouldn't have been good for young children but it was perfect for us.

There are fairly quiet areas of Lake Winnipesaukee such as Moultonboro, Wolfeboro, Center Harbor. The trouble is finding a cottage not a fancy summer place. Wolfeboro is a beautiful town and it's easy drive to the White Mountains. The Center Harbor/Moultonboro area is close to Center Sandwich, a very lovely small town, Tamworth (summer theater), Meredith is busy but has some nice shops.

We rented a lovely cabin on the shore of Lake Champlain in Vermont. We were on the southern part of the lake, near Vergennes, about 45 minutes south of Burlington. It's a great area with lots to do and see and lots of cute towns. Lake Champlain is beautiful and not as busy as you might think.

I don't know if our specific cabin is still available, but you will find tons of Lake Champlain rentals on vrbo and homeaway.

I would really recommend Squam Lake over Winnisquam, especially if you're looking for quaint towns (Sandwich, Holderness, and Center Harbor all fit the bill). However, rentals on Squam are probably more expensive. Another option would be Newfound Lake, which is also a bit more off the beaten path than Winnisquam but not as exclusive as Squam. And the water is crystal clear. Look into Bristol, Bridgewater, and Hebron.
