Need suggestions for Fall Getaway - Western U.S.

We have some UAL vouchers that are about to expire, so are trying to plan a long-weekend fall getaway. I'm going back and forth between flying into a city where we wouldn't have to rent a car, or flying into some mountain resort area, where we would rent a car and see the sights. Requirements:

1. No more than a 2.5 hour direct flight from LAX.
2. No more than a 2 hour drive from airport to destination.
3. A place with some fall foliage would be a big bonus.
4. Not Las Vegas or Phoenix area, since we have been there recently.

Right now, we are thinking San Francisco, Tahoe or Park City, but I would love to get some Fodorite suggestions.

Thanks!

Forgot to give the dates --this would be mid-late October.

Taho is beautiful. Not much for folliage, especially after last years fires but nice beaches, a beatiful lake and depending on what you are into, there is also fishing and gambling.

Park City is fabulous in the fall but colors peak at end of September to early October. I am going there myself at the end of September.

Thanks for the replies. That's good to know about the foliage. If it has peaked in Park City by that time, then I imagine the Colorado resorts would be past peak as well?

I thought there was an old thread about western fall foliage, but I couldn't find it. Maybe it's time to start another.

Any other suggestions? Oregon? Idaho?

Another vote for Santa Fe / Taos, especially if the aspens are "turning" as you head up to the Ski Basin...
