Need SC or NC GETAWAY FOR NEXT WEEKEND

My wife and I need a get-away roughly 3-4 hours drive in any direction from Charlotte. We are recovering from a loss---dream job that went away abruptly and publicly. Money is not a concern and we like the water, old cities, movies, nature, history and the arts. No location need hold any or all of these. We want to get out this Thursday, April 25 for several days. Help us get our heads clear please! Suggestions Fodorites?

Charleston certainly fits your criteria and it might also shake off those blues. Google it and see what you think, But it is a busy time so make reservations soon.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Asheville, NC is closer than that - but a great little town with most of what you listed. Charleston also sounds great to me. We just returned from there a few weeks ago and had a grand time. RIchmond, VA is one of our favorite cities for a quick getaway and if full of history, art and good food. Good Luck!

Wilmington, NC - you can stay in the quaint downtown area by the Cape Fear River, or near any of the local beaches (Wrightsville, Kure) or try the beaches on your side of the river (Oak Island) with a nice little side trip to Southport which hosts a nice waterfront with several tasty restaurants and wine shops that are very relaxing to pass the time in.
