Hi!
Welcome to the forums. A few tips.... if you include your destination in your title you will receive more responses. (for example, Mom and son looking for safe hotel in DC).
Also, it helps to give a bit more detail of what you are looking for so people can give you the best advice...include budget price range, interests, if want to stay in town, and such.
Hope this helps you get started.

Since safety is something everyone wants in a hotel, that doesn't really tell us anything much about your needs. ou might get more useful advice if you indicated other aspects of lodging that are important to you -- price, convenient public transport, parking, etc.

Safety isn't much of an issue with any of the downtown hotels. It's hard to beat the JW for its location to the museums, plus a pool if the youngster likes to swim and proximity to kid-friendly dining.
The Willard is nice if it's in your budget or you can score one of their specials.
But as others noted, a budget range would help because the options vary widely.

If you're going mainly to the museums, the Loews L'Enfant Plaza hotel would be within walking distance from most of the Smithsonian offerings. The hotel sits stop a metro station, and the surrounding area is primarily government buildings.
In a sort of mini-mall below the hotel are several casual restaurants and small shops; Le Bon Pain is nice for breakfast. The hotel itself has two restaurants, and you can get packages that include breakfast.
We found the hotel both comfortable and convenient for sightseeing.

Hi
I travelled to Washington by myself in May and stayed at the Econoldge on the outskirts of DC. It was rated the best Econolodge in the US. It was only 75.00 per night, had brand new beds, cable TV, coffee maker, free expanded hot breakfast with waffles and fruit, free parking and free shuttle service to Union Station which was only 3 miles away. From there you can get the subway to almost any part of DC. Surrounding the hotel were many fast food restaurants and the hotel itself had a great Chinese restaurant.

The usual rule of thumb is to try to stay in the NW area of town safety-wise if you plan to stay in DC.
We recently stayed at the Embassy Suites on 22nd & M and really liked it. It was very family friendly with free breakfasts and a small indoor pool. The only potential problem with it is it is about a 5 block walk to the nearest subway station. We found the subway easy to use and very clean.
Hope this helps.
