need opinions on Ocean Park Inn in San Diego

I've read good comments on this web site and good ones on Trip Advisor. However, several people on Trip Advisor complained about it's shabbiness and the amount of homeless people in the area, so I'm a little concerned. I'm organizing a reunion of 15 women relatives and friends for August. We've been given a rate of $214 for partial ocean view rooms here. Is this a good spot for us? Can you recommend anything better in our price range?
Is this a family-oriented area, or a wild and crazy beach area? HELP? The reponsibility of planning this is intimidating!

it's right by pacific beach. it is a very lively area as there is a boardwalk that runs along the ocean so a lot of runners, bladders, bikers, etc. it is a younger, more causual crowd then you might find in more upscale la jolla or coronado. there are occassionally a group of 4-5 homeless people that might be hanging out relaxing but it is not overrun by homeless people by any stretch of the immagination. if seeing a couple of homeless people will bother anyone in your group then you should go stay in la jolla or coronado (and pay the price!). it is a family oriented beach area with plenty of restaurants around to choose from. i wouldn't hesitate to stay there. especially with a large group, there are many activities to please everyone.

I will second what itt says. My aunt and uncle (who are in their late 60's) stayed at Ocean Park Inn last summer (Aug) and liked it. I did go visit them one day-didn't think the hotel was shabby at all. They did have an oceanfront room which made it nice. There definitely were the homeless hanging out in front of the hotel area on the boardwalk. There may have been more than 4-5 but they were just sitting and not bothering anyone.

In August, the boardwalk is very busy, people walking, running, skating as itt said. So the homeless just blend in and are not noticeable. My uncle still runs everyday and loves the area for that. Also, lots of families.

I think the area depends on what your relatives, friends like to do. If you like to sit on the beach, walk, etc then this is a great place. There are plenty of restaurants around. If they are more into upscale restaurants and shopping than La Jolla or Coronado is better.

I think that area gets a bad rap- I personally love the Mission Beach/Pacific Beach area.
We stayed at the Best Western Blue Seas Lodge- it is right on the beach - I think we paid 184 for ocean view- we could hear the waves all night long/ had nice pool area/ hot tub/
Its a little worn - but we thought it was fine - and I think they have done some rennovations since we were there last.
Its right across the street from World Famous which is a nice restaurant .
I loved the boardwalk and all the interesting people -
