Need Homer, AK restaurant recommendations
We'll be there for three nights and would like to eat in a nice restaurant every night. Quantity is not important but quality is. We can splurge one evening but for two other nights would not want to pay more than $60.00 for two people excluding drinks and tax

There is a fabulous place out East End road called the Homestead you may want to consider, reservations highly recommended.
Lands End Resort at the end of the Homer Spit. It has the water view, with boats and birds and the bay.
Olies for pizza, Don Joses is fun for casual Mexican. Oh, Cafe Cups, an eclectic little place with nice wine and different dishes.
You should try a couple other places on the spit. Have a walk, check out their posted menus, decide..
enjoy my hometown and have a nice trip, J.

Silly me.. don't forget, you can opt for a dinner across the bay too. You take the Danny J. on one of their trips, and eat at the Saltry before returning.
Seldovia is an interesting day trip, sort of Alaska in the fifties vibe. You almost expect to spot young Opie with his fishing pole skipping down the road.
Once, a local, who operated the power plant,( and must have been lonely that day, lol), invited my brother and sister in law and dh and myself into the plant.
It had been a hospital and had many antique relics, some of them probably hazardous. Raspberry bushes and blueberries the size of nickels are plentiful too.

We always had a good meal in Homestead but sizes of meals are big. Too big, IMO. Halibut never tastes the same on the second day. If I recall correctly, with appetizers it will be more than $30.00 per person. We found food at the Cafe Cups always delicious and very creative. Personally, I would return to Cafe Cups first then to Homestead.
jetset1, does Olives serve only pizza?

Pat~ I haven't yet been there, but it had good reviews. I believe they have other menu choices besides pizza,
For truly outstanding pizza and beer in Anchorage, no one can compete with The Moose's Tooth, off of Old Seward.
In Soldotna, the Moose is Loose is a sinfully good bakery and latte stop.
Darn, that moose family is good. Now, if only I could find some chocolate mousse~

Thank you jetset1. Do you know whether The Moose's Tooth is a quiet enough place for a nice dinner and conversation with our friends? If not, do you have any suggestions for a quiet place with an excellent food in Anchorage?
Can you give me some idea how to find the Moose is Loose in Soldotna on the way to or from Homer?

The Moose's Tooth is loud and boisterous. So some friends might enjoy that, but it doesn't sound like that's what you want.
Simon and Seafort's is nice and has the view. Orso is interesting. Lots of floks enjoy the Glacier Brewhouse, no view, but smack dab in the middle of Anchorage, nice building, good wine and beer.
On C Street, you have all the chain places like Outback, Lone Star, Sea Galley, TGI Fridays, assorted standard fare.
For a heavenly drive along Turnagain Arm, there's the Turnagain House, annd another twenty minutes, Double Musky, which is spendy, but Cajun, plentiful and fun. Just get there early, no reservations taken.
On the Moose is Loose, easy.. just watch on your right side, coming through Soldotna after the Homestead jewelry store. Oh, sinfully good. I love their honey bran muffins.
When will you be coming through. I'd love to meet a real life Fodorite! Shoot, I'll even lend you my lucky salmon pole. Safe travels and ask away, J.

Pat2003~ well, on the fishing lessons, it would be easier if you were a local. We are permitted to dipnet and get a quota, depending on family size.
This is great fun. It's like putting a giant scoop with a long handle in the water and strolling offshore.
All kinds of interesting people are there, some camp overnight on the beach, and it's like a mini circus with carny folk in living color.
I am in the Soldotna area, ten minutes from everything. Just now, the moose have had their calves. The caribou herd can be seen around the Kenai river and eagles abound. If you are a bird lover, welcome to paradise!
I'll send more to your other address soon. J.

BayouGal, aren't you coming to Alaska this year? I thought your were planning your trip. We should get together for some fishing. My husband doesnt want to hear about fishing. He dives and snorkels with fish so there is now way he is going to go fishing. I need a company for this activity in Alaska.

Yeah, it's great upper arm workout.
It's the pullin arm for dandelion theft from my "oddest neighbor" yards, lol.(I wonder who crossed the line there..)
Anyhoo, you and Pat and I should get together for some beach fun. I can make a wicked campfire, then I have us signed up at taste testers for a vodka slam contest.
We then grab one salmon out of the net, and whoever draws the short straw has to sing, in a "cousin marilyn" voice:
I'm gonna do somethin freaky to you..

J, I can become a local for a day or two. Actually mu husband and I are playing with an idea of spending a whole summer in Alaska with our cat.
We, my husband, I but not our cat, are birders and discovered one place in Alaska where we saw unbelievable number of species. Ready to be in Alaska right now!

Okay, serious moment for a rare instant..
I have a Red Robin with four new babies right outside my home office window. I watch as the dad brings food to the nest and they spell each other off. I have someone's picture blog on my favorites showing development for the next two weeks.
I share this with you as a bird person. Before this, I was strictly a dog/cat/horse/dolphin fan. I had a mynah bird as a kid who only spit grapes on the wall, btw.
So these robins have brought some joy to our household. My two boys are being respectful too. They are usually out with air soft and bb guns(woods surround us), but under threat of my cooking, they are cooperating.
