I can tell you where NOT to stay. Had two nights booked at The Presidio Inn on Lombard St. in August this year.
I knew that Lombard St. accommodations are noisy ... have stayed at Chelsea Motor Inn twice and Buena Vista once. However when you have a car and you're visiting San Francisco and you don't relish paying a hotel US$40 per night to find somewhere for your car - a motor inn is the way to go.
HOWEVER ... The Presidio Inn ... oh ... my ... gawd ... noisy doesn't even begin to describe it. Plus it gives "basic accommodation" a whole new meaning.
After one completely sleepless (and I mean, for me, "completely") night I told my husband "we're outta here" ... never got a refund for the second night from the "charming" desk person "Marty". So I guess they got paid twice for the same night.
Thanks for listening to my rant. Any of the other motor inns I mentioned are actually very nice (however noise is a factor on Fri. and Sat. nights).
Next time I go to S.F. I'm flying in and staying at The Orchard Hotel and that's FINAL.

check www.biddingfortravel.com and bid on priceline. I would suggest stating in Union Square.

JulieR,
Another endorsement for Columbus Motor Inn. We stayed there this past August. If you are able to walk (sorry, I live in SW FL, so I'm conscious of those with health restrictions) you are within a 10 min. walk to North Beach, 15 minutes to Fisherman's Wharf area and 15 minutes to Chinatown. You can take MUNI buses to get to Union Square. We had a rental car, so free parking made this Inn our choice. If you aren't renting a car, you might find some other choice makes more sense. Have fun.

Another vote for the Columbus Motor Inn. We just returned from staying there and were very pleased. We had a rental car so the free parking was a major plus. The signs I saw at other hotels said parking was from $30-$40 a night. Even with a decent rate on Priceline I'm sure we would have ended up spending more. Our room had 2 beds and was very nice, clean, and spacious. The location is great! We walked or rode the bus everywhere - never took the car out of the garage. We walked back to the hotel at night and never felt unsafe.

Thanks for all your replies, I booked the Columbus Motor Inn for 5 nights, and then we still are going to go on to Sonoma for two nights...Sounds like the Columbus Motor Inn is a good bet with the free parking and close to alot of sights.
