Need advice on NYC neighborhood convenient to convention center
I posted a few weeks earlier asking about places to stay convenient to Javits Center. I realize now that I need to choose an area that's pleasant, safe, and convenient to the center via public transport, but not necessarily near the tourist sights. I'd like a comfortable neighborhood feel, with some nice ethnic restaurants. Most of my time will be spent going to meetings, and just wandering around. I'll probably go to a couple of museums, but won't be going to the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty. Does midtown still make sense, or is there a quiter area that would fit the bill?

The neighborhood that the Javits Center is located is the UPPER WEST SIDE...
You could stay at the Salisbury Hotel on W.57th between 6th and 7th--it is a much better area location-wise to do stuff at night....And it is still only a short walk to the Javits Center from the Salisbury...Salisbury is in MID TOWN...
Columbus Ave and 73rd st ( upper West Side) is loaded with great restaurants and bars...

To andy: I don't know anything about the hotel you mention, but I just want to point out that I think your geography may be a bit off.
I don't believe the Javits Center would ever be considered the UWS. Also, while 57th & 6th is certainly a better neighborhood than the convention center area, I don't know that I'd call it quiet, and it's certainly not a "short" walk to the Javitz Center, which runs from 34th to 39th along 11th Avenue. So assuming an entrance midrange, you're still talking over 20 blocks uptown and then at least 5 crosstown blocks. More power to you if that's your idea of short walk!
The hotel you recommend may still be a perfectly valid option for the poster, so long as she takes into consideration that she'll probably need to take a cab back & forth.

Whoa, hold the phone. The Javits Center, located on W. 36th Street, is not even close to the Upper West Side (which begins on West 59th and continues north).
Stay in Midtown (or the UWS) and take a taxi, subway or bus (M42) to Javits -- the area around the convention center is not a good one, and public transportation is excellent in Manhattan, so don't worry about being within walking distance. For a comfortable neighborhood feel, midtown east of Fifth would be best or the UWS.
