NE Portland, OR Food
We are heading to Portland next week for 4 days and need some food recommendations. We will be staying near the airport. We have our two girls (5 and 13) and two Grandmas. I have looked at portlandfood.org but everything seems to be slanted toward the young, hip, free-spending, childless people. We are fairly adventurous but need something where we won't have to worry about bringing kids and spending $$$ for every meal. Last year we went to Newport Seafood Grill near Lloyd Center and had a good meal and the kids were fine. Went to Laurelwood Pub and though the food was good, it was noisy and crowded and the "play area" for kids was a yucky pit in a corner. So, that said, give me your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

You'll get many responses from Or. locals who can give you good recommendations. I will add in advance that NE Alberta Street is fairly close to the airport and has many wonderful restaurants. My favorite is the Tin Shed for breakfast.

You're right about the portlandfood.org site. Most of the restaurants discussed there are not the types you'd want to take your girls. Places (on the east side) more appropriate that come to mind are Esparza's for Tex-Mex, Salty's on the Columbia River - a few notches upscale from Newport Bay, or any of several McMenamin's: Kennedy School near Alberta St., Edgefield at Troutdale, or Bagdad Theater & Pub.
If you're wanting to venture to the west side of the river, I could come up with more since that area is more my stomping grounds. But hey, at least I topped the thread for ya!

Thanks! We're going to a convention at the Memorial coliseum so we could go west as well. When its just DH and I we go to Wildwood, or we've been to Jakes. Or we just go find a place. With all the family along, it's a bit more difficult. When we went to Laurelwood last year one of the Grandmas was completely overwhelmed by the noise because she doesn't hear well. We've even taken the kids to Whole Foods and picked up a picnic. What about the new Bridgeport pub near Powells? And McMenamins is a great idea. We've been to Edgefield before and liked it. Where is Kennedy school, approximately? Mostly I just need places for dinner.

McMenamins Kennedy School is on NE 33rd Ave and about Killingsworth I think. Go to www.McMenamins.com for details (there are other McMenamins such as the one at NE 15th and Broadway, just up the street from Newport Seafood Grill).
Nearby the Kennedy School (right at 33rd and Killingsworth) is a good pizza place called Hot Lips Pizza. It's a local chain that supports local farmers and uses natural ingredients in their food. Perhaps it's not a great "dinner place" but in a pinch give it a try.
There's a popular BBQ place on Martin Luther King and NE Russell called Russell Street BBQ. It's almost across the street from the Nike Factory Store on MLK but is actually on Russell Street west of MLK - same building as Gold Rush Coffee. It's a straight shot on MLK north from the convention center. I've eaten there only a few times but it seems busy yet family friendly.

Yep, the new Bridgeport is good, and so is Henry's Tavern (name is a bit deceiving), also near Powell's and actually owned by the same people who own Newport Bay. They also own the Manzana Grill restaurants, one of which is just a few blocks north of Whole Foods. Mid-range in terms of price, and family friendly. The kids might also like Piazza Italia, a small family run place on Johnson St. in the Pearl. There's always italian soccer on the TV, and don't be surprised if papa comes by the table to serenade. We need to get back there....
More in the center of town... well, there's Mother's, Romano's Macaroni Grill, and if the kids are adventuresome, Typhoon. I'm sure you know that regardless of where you are in the city core, Pearl, and NW districts, you'll find pizza on almost every corner. My family's favorite is Pizzicato.

The lodging was arranged for us. I don't mind the location and it has breakfast and an indoor pool so the girls like that. I would love to find a good pizza place. It is something that all of us will always eat. I will look up Pizzicato. Would you take kids to Bridgeport?

We loved the Caprese Salads at Pizzacato..Bridgeport is a very nice mall/town center..good restaurant chains there..and a nice cinema..Due to beachbums recommendation mms and I had lunch at a place there..I cannot remember the name, beachbum, the small pretty place..lol .. what is the name...
I always felt that a lot of the portlandfood group put too much importance on the food trucks in town..
I second Henrys, it is a great place for the whole family, kids will like it, adults like it and the food is actually very good.
We liked Halibut on Alberta, fried fish and french fries, great down to earth atmosphere and very good fresh fish..
I am making myself hungry lol

this might be off the wall, but (when I visit Portland) i take my young grand-daughter to the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) for the day. Inside OMSI there is a decent restaurant that focuses on locally grown produce and has many different restuarant choices. Theyhave exhibits, IMAX theatre, movies, etc. It is in NW Portland - kinda far from the airport though, but makes for a fun, family experience. If you have family in Portland you may have already been there - but just a thought.

Hi Scarlett!! That place in Bridgeport is Split. My office is close enough that it's become like a second home to me. ;-) But I think oregonmom's asking about Bridgeport Brewpub, right? I'm trying to remember if they tables outside there, which would be nice if it's a sunny day. Otherwise, I think I'd opt for Henry's.

The Bridgeport Brewput on northrup? That is where a huge construction project is going on...not sure how pleasant it will be to sit out by that..

Yes, I did mean Bridgeport Brewpub. I will look up Henry's as well, that sounds good. I love Caprese salad, too. I make it at home often. Thanks, everybody. We have been to OMSI several times.

It's a traditional choice for Portlanders, but Old Spaghetti Factory is always popular. That's down on the waterfront. There's a Red Robin Burgers over in the Rose Quarter (near the Arena and the Coliseum). Down at Riverplace, there are several spots. It used to be Newport Bay, now it's the Marina Fish House (right on the water). There's a casual deli there as well. It's a nice spot to sit out and view the river. (You can get there by streetcar.)
