Picking out a place for a vacation home based on the kid's desire to go to sporting events is probably the worse reason that I have ever heard of.

In the first place, most kids will hate to leave home and friends to go to a place where there may not be any familiar kids to see.

Secondly, by next year the 8 year old may have a brand new thing that he's interested in, and could care less about sports. If he falls in love with computer games, you would have to drag him away to see anything.

If all you are planning on is 3-4 days at a time, it's not going to matter one whit about the religious or political viewpoints of the people. They aren't going to get to know you or you them. You are going to be more or less like a tourist just passing through.

Are you prepared to have regular maintenance done on the property when you aren't there? If not, plan to spend at least one day of that 3-4 day stay cleaning up the place.

starrsville - you can be difficult (lol) & shame on you for trying to keep someone from making a mistake or even (horrors) help them, despite themselves.

It is truly bizarre to me that someone would postulate buying a "vacation" home in a subdivision of Charlotte for 4 or 5 days several times a year. and even moreso, that they would consider this to be quality time of vacation. It boggles the mind, when, if you really think about it, you can rent an apartment or a hotel suite for that length of time without this outlay of money and taxes, etc. It gets curiouser and curiouser.

The last straw for me was when the hypothetical boats on the hypothetical lake in the area with kids and sports and flights without connections and skyrocketing property values and activities that aren't "alacart" had to be motorboats!

And Starrsville, from one part-time Georgian to another, the "Bi Gal" comment really doesn't become you.

Hello all. I see I have ruffled a lot of feathers. Does not seem to take much with some of you. Starsville is very pompous as I see him on other sites. I still don't see what is wrong with wanting to be within a couple of hours of a sporting event and vacationing at the same time.
I see a lot of ignorance on here. That is one thing I have a hard time tolerating.
GUY18 the website seemed to me that it was not geared towards kids. I could be wrong. People get real sensitive about the areas they either live or vacation.
Anyway,despite some of the ignorance and stupidity I have read(I am not a builder or contractor) I have a good idea where I will look now. Some on here were very helpful.
It is funny because I see some of these same posters on other sites in here being arrogant and pompous with others. Do you guys have anything else better to do? Guess not.

Big Al--Sorry you have found us so unpleasant. I suppose that forums like this allow people (like me) to be less diplomatic than we would be in real life. Some helpful advice would be that, for a place that you're going to be for only 4 days at a time, it's kind of silly to make sporting events and kids for your kids to play with priorities. Why not decide what you would enjoy AS A FAMILY that you wouldn't get to do in your full-time home? Hiking? Camping? Lake boating? I really can't see having two beach homes, but that's up to you.

Everyone can certainly appreciate the importance of kids, but your kids might get more out of learning the joys of the mountains (for instance)than staying in their comfort zones of sports and friends. Just something to think about...

I think Guy has beautifully described what many of us who own homes in the mountains believe and know - but did not relay very well.

I learned to love the mountains during family camping trips on National Forest land. Fishing and playing along the rhodendendron-lined creek. The very same creek feeds into the gorgeous mountain lake I now enjoy on my motorized boat! It is hard to imagine ANY sporting event that would be able to drag my brothers out of those hills. Okay, maybe if Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth would have been playing in Atlanta - but that's Field of Dreams stuff.

Family vacations - and family vacation homes - should (in my opinion, of course) give families a chance to do things together. Things they can't, or don't have the opportunity to, do elsewhere.

WE know that the places we recommended for consideration are full of kids having family fun. The OP couldn't/ wouldn't "hear" that. That is sad - at least for the benefit of his kids. It's even more sad that his only way of coping is to attack and insult people trying to give sincere input.

Guy 18,I did not say you were one of the unpleasant ones. Your points are well taken. Actually,even though I live near the beach(Gulf)we rarely go there. Again,when I was talking about sporting events I meant once in a while going to a game. My son and I enjoy doing this together.
I think I will check out the Lake Lure possibly Hendersonville area. Lake Lure is only an hour and a half away if my son would like to go to a football or basketball game.
