We'd like to visit Washington, D. C., to see the National Christmas Tree, with our son and his family this year. Our grandchildren are twelve and fourteen. We live just a three hour drive from the capital and thought we'd drive up in the morning, and spend the day at a museum or a special holiday attraction, then have dinner before heading over to President's Park after sunset. I understand there is nightly entertainment in the area but know little else.

We're not sure yet, if we'll do this on a Saturday or wait till school is closed for the holiday break and go mid-week. We do plan to spend the night in the DC area before heading home the next day.

Can anyone please provide information about things to do or other places to go, in the area, to make this a special experience?

What area? Are you talking about DC as a whole? There's tons of information for that. Or are you just talking about the area near the White House?

The Smithsonian Botanic Garden, on the grounds of the Capitol, has a fantastic Christmas exhibit. There are replicas of the White House and other buildings made out of natural materials. It is really fascinating. Also, it will be warm in the greenhouse!

They used to keep a yule log burning close to the National Christmas tree. Not sure if they still do or not.

I agree, the Botanic Garden would make a good holiday stop! In addition to the National Xmas Tree, there is a tree from each of the 50 states. If weather permits, those are fun to stroll among.

Since you have time, contact your senator/representative and get tickets for a White House tour. You'll be able to see it decorated for the holiday.

Honestly, it won't take you long to walk through the grounds by the National Tree. We live outside the city and go every year. There are trees decorated from each state and trains under the tree. They do have entertainment in the evening. You should be able to find out more information closer to the date on the web site.

The Smithsonian museums are always fun. Our favorite is the American History Museum. The Archives are also fun to visit to see the Declaration of Independence.

There's a ice skating rink right on the mall near the Natural History Museum.
