Napa Valley By Bike?

My boyfriend and I are planning a Three Day/Night trip to Napa Valley in the begining of November. We have heard that an incredible way to see the region and visit the wineries is by bike. Does anyone have any experiences bike riding in Napa or the surrounding areas? Any suggestions? Any places not to miss?

It sounds like you want to plan your own trip, but you still might want to look at the web site for Backroads. They organize trips of this kind for groups, and you could use one of their itineraries as a staarting point.

Hello Kal156,

We just did our 6th "Tour of Napa Valley" this past Sunday. Absolute gorgeous day for a 35, 65 or 100 mile tour!

Anyway, here is a website of the club in the Napa area that sponsors it each year. That should get your search started.http://www.napanet.net/~eccweb/index.shtml

When we go on our own, we usually use Yountville as our base. We either stay at the Marriott or the funky little Rail Inn. (Pretty diverse but the Rail is quirky and located within walking distance to a lot of good restaurants-but there are other nice places to stay, too.)

We stayed at "The Rail" Sunday night because after the ride and a great dinner at the Napa Valley Grille, you don't want to ruin it by jumping into
I-80 Sunday afternoon traffic and spoil your karma. (Did I say karma?)

Also, be careful on wine tasting and bike riding. You can still get arrested by the Calif Hiway Patrol for DUI if you've had a bit to much o' the grape.

Any Qs, feel free.
Aloha
Kal

Kall,
I did a weekend bike trip in the Russian River area (Somona Valley I believe) with Backroads in 1994. Watching our budgets we opted for the camping option and I can recommend it highly. The biking was great - Backroads mapped out our routes with many vineyards highlighted. They had a van following which picked up our wine purchases (can't carry much on a bike) and also served as a sag wagon if you got too tired. The food was excellent, and how they served such wonderful fare out of their van with portable cookstoves was a mystery to me. The Backroads leaders were great and I would recommend them highly.
