Nantucket over Halloween

We may head to the island next weekend 29th thru the 1st. Any special goings on or restaurants or events we should look for? Hoping for a few days of walks and bikerides and strolling and eating while visiting the boat basin.

Thanks

I see many restaurants are closed for the season and sadly the nantucket scallop season begins the day we would be leaving. any thoughts on restaurants that remain open are welcome. we likely will stroll by Queegeg and Lola

And as if I haven't topped this enough, rather then come home for football sunday, where does one's husband watch the games and keep up with his football pools while on island? I'm thinking Brotherhood, but perhaps there are other watering holes that fit the bill of sports bar late in the season. . . .

First, there is a wonderful Halloween parade downtown. Because so many people live in relatively isolated places, neighborhood trick or treating is replaced by a costume parade on Main Street, followed by trick or treating at the merchants. Adults and kids dress up, but the trick or treat is just for kids. Babies, grandmas, dogs, all out.

Went to Lola last week and really enjoyed it again. They are in their fall menu, and it is much calmer, though still busy on a Thursday night. I don't like it in the summer as it is too jammed. Try the Korean chicken legs. You can also get truffle fries with the Lolaburgers (beef and tuna) so you don't have to order them separately.

I like the menu at Town better than Queequeg's, but they share the same kitchen, so if one is open, the other is likely to be.

Corazon del Mar was open as of yesterday, and they always have delicious food at prices similar to the places above. American Seasons is still open as is the Boarding House, but I don't know if they will be at Halloween.

For inexpensive food, at least by island standards, the Easy Street Cafe has become our goto place. Fried clams, surf and turf, fish and chips, etc, and the Cisco Whales Tail Pale Ale is cheaper than at the Cisco Brewery itself. You can also take out good Jamaican plates from Spanky's on the strip at Steamship Wharf. El Rincon, just past the rotary on the airport road (Old South) has interesting Salvadorean specialties.

There is a new bakery on Centre Street at the corner across from the Jared Coffin House. I don't eat sweets owing to diabetees, but it looks delish.

I should mention the cafe at the airport, which is becoming increasingly popular. They have breakfast until 2 and again at dinner time, with good omelets and (I am informed) unbelievable blueberry pancakes. Thursday is rib night, Friday is fish and chips, Saturday is Indian Fusion. We are going this Saturday, so I will let you know what Indian Fusion means!

On the other hand, I have quit eating at Even Keel since I saw the food broker's truck unloading frozen pre-cooked fried eggs. Yecch!

For Football: If you have a car, Pudley's Pub at the Faregrounds on Fairgrounds road seems to be the hot hangout for the brews and ball crowd. They have 72 items on their bar menu, all fried. Your husband's cardiologist will love him. Also requiring a car would be AK Diamond's, near the airport, another big guy scene, though you could get a taxi to either. In town, the Brotherhood is worth checking out as is Rose and Crown. The places on Straight Wharf are all closed.

He could come over and watch football (well, the Patriots) at my house, but we will be on our way to Rome! Have fun!

Halloween is a great time to visit Nantucket. Skip LoLa 41 (mediocre food, high prices) and ditto on Corazon del Mar. However, you should definitely try American Seasons! Food there is always impressive AND they have "small plates" menu that is very reasonably priced. Centre Street Bistro is another fantastic restaurant, keep in mind they are BYOB. Crosswinds (the airport restaurant) is good for breakfast and has great salads and entrees at dinner. If truffle fries sound good to you, skip LoLa and go to Fifty-Six Union -- theirs simply cannot be beat.

And for complete and up-to-date events when you come, check out Nantucket.net.

I always wondered who kept 56 Union open since no one I know has eaten there in years. Now I know one! But she can't be much of a foodie if she thinks Corazon is mediocre! Next thing she will say that Sfoglia has good service!

Seriously, in season I agree totally with ACKsuze about Lola, but the cooking improves as the numbers of customers go down. I love the food at American Seasons, but it is too expensive for me to justify spending the money. Ditto Dune, although I don't think the food is all that great. Ditto Oran Mor.

Anyway, you won't starve! But stay away from Even Keel if you like fried eggs!

I guess, to keep an Even Keel, one should not chow down on bangers and mash and blood sausage and sausage and biscuits with gravy and banana mac pancakes with a maine blueberry twist, and a side of smoked bacon, but a simple fried egg? That is disturbingly curious yet too disturbing to ever investigate.

We are watching the weather and waiting to decide, but oh how we love the islands off season! My husband was thinking heading home to southern ma for football sunday,,,,, now we are considering changing the dates to taste the first nantucket scallops of the season - - - - unless we can find scallop contraband! LOL!!!!

Again, thanks for the good advice to the two ACK's

Should I dress up as a tourist from the Vineyard or is that cliche?

My husband could dress up as the man from Nantucket who's head looks like a bucket with a t shirt that tells the yankees to suckit

Sobbbb!!!!!!

I want a do~over! We have been invited to the Patriots Game in Foxborough. I wanna go to Nantucket and hang at the Cottages. But, but, but, that's what makes a marraige last. Compromise. It's all Ack's fault. Had he been home I coulda sold Nantucket football in his home, regardless of sitting in a cold stadium. And if that's not bad enuff, I am expected to dress up for Holloween! And do something fabulously tailgatish! The use of Ack's kitchen would have trumped anything I can bring to the stadium! The horror of it all.
