nantucket-beaches? dinning?
I will be traveling to Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard in late August. I would like to make reservations at a nice rest. for a romantic dinner. I can not decide between Toppers and The Summer House in Nantucket. Any suggestions? Should I try both? Also, where are the best beaches in Nantucket? What are the must do's for a first time visitor?
Thanks in advance.

I made a VERY lengthy reply to this same question last week. Do a search on Nantucket to find it. Toppers or Summer House? It's a tough choice but I'd pick the Summer House. I prefer the atmosphere of SH to the more formal Toppers. They are both excellent though. Gotta run, if you don't find the post reply again and I'll give you more info tonight.

The responses a few weeks ago were to my question. We went to Nantucket for our first time for five days. The three most popular restaurants seem to be The Pearl (book well in advance), 21 Federal (both in town) and Toppers. The prices at all these restaurants are too high, but they are excellent. Toppers is probably the priciest. If you try 21 Federal check out the Portobello mushroom appetizer, its a signature dish. You might consider Summer House for lunch and drinks. If you enjoy bicycling it is a thing to do. Skip the Brotherhood. The other posters to my question were very helpful. Have a great time.

Toppers is our favorite restaurant on the island, but there are some who find it to "stuffy". We love the pampering we get there, though, and the wine list is unlike you've ever seen before. It is truly a special place, and everything from A to Z if A#1 in our opinion. All restaurants are pricey on Nantucket. The Summer House we were at just last week. The food was fabulous. The prices were high. The atmosphere was lovely. They do a good job there, but it doesn't have the special formality that makes you feel as though you are being doted on like you get at Toppers. It is very nice there, though... Both have wonderful bars for that drink before dinner which we never do.... The Pearl is also exquisite. It's definitely worth considering. Big salt water tanks with gorgeous fish (which I heard die too often, at least this was the case 2 years ago...they didn't really know how to care for them -it's tricky, those salt water tanks) Any way, The Pearl is great!!! They have raw oysters on tiny shot glasses, all lined up on a tray. Each shot glass has a different flavor... lime maybe in one, salsa in another... so you go down the line and sample each oyster the way it is, mixed up with the stuff in each shot glass! It's the only time I ever have had oysters! I think they call them shooters. Its a New York City feel in there, with soft neon blue lighting behind gauzey curtains... neat. Both Toppers and The Pearl are freezing! Ladies, bring your sweaters For SURE! One place not yet mentioned is The Galley at Cliffside. A beautful on the beach restaurant for GORGEOUS SUNSETS! WOW. Try all 4 then let me know which one you liked!
