Nantucket

hi,
any suggestions for lodging for an October wedding near the Nantucket Yacht Club? We have three children ages 7, 5 and 1. Would love to be centrally located so the kids can walk to everything, including the beach.
Thanks!

You might want to mention how much you want to spend each night.

Is this on a weekend? How long are you staying? You may want to look into renting a house as most of the lodging in town is at Inns and B&Bs. I don't know how that would work with three little ones, plus some of the smaller places don't allow children under 10 or so. There is the Beachside which is near the Yacht Club http://www.thebeachside.com/main.html and is nice for families. You can also check out www.nantucket.net - they have an extensive lodging section. If you want to rent a house, the Nantucket website also has links to brokers that can help you out. Enjoy - October is a beautiful time for a wedding on Nantucket.

Good advice from MarieF. The Beachside is fairly convenient to the Yacht Club and is said to be good for families. It is laid out like a motel rather than a multi-story hotel with lobbies etc. It is a bit of a walk from Main Street.

The hotel situation here is somewhat difficult now as the Harbor House is undergoing major redevelopment and the Gordon Folger across the street is in the middle of a multi-year construction project.

The White Elephant is next to Children's Beach, within tennis ball range of the Yacht Club, and a short walk from the center of everything, but it is expensive and perhaps a bit formal for small children.

Being near the beach is nice, but October is not beach weather in Nantucket the way it might be further south. It is fine for walking, but they aren't going to go in the water unless they are hardy little rascals.

You can expect temperatures close to 60 and some nice sunny days, with increasding cold and rain as you get later in the month. For the wedding you will need some sort of evening shawl and you will need jackets for evenings and probably raingear. I don't know where the wedding itself will be, but the cobblestones and brick sidewalks pose challenges for stilleto heels.

More opinions if you need it.

I have always liked the White Elephant on that part of the island. I have heard nice things about the Veranda House which is also very close the Yacht Club

I think I would not stay at Verandah House with small children. Some of the verandahs are three stories above the ground, and the railings are wood!
