Myrtle Beach in May
My family and I have just decided we'd like to a family vacation in May to Myrtle Beach. It would be, possibly, 8 adults and a 1 year old. It would be either the second or third week of May. I realize the second week is Bike Week and am trying to avoid going that week, but it may be the only option with everyone's work schedules. I have been before during that time and it's just crazy, at least on the Grand Strand area...If we narrow our search to North Myrtle Beach or Garden City/Surfside Beach areas, are we still crazy to go at that time? We don't plan on going out much, and are really looking for a relaxing beach getaway.
On a side note, has anyone rented a condo from Condo-lux.net? Are the reputable. I found a really good deal for a 4 bedroom condo at Crescent Shores. Is that a good area if we are there during bike week?

Hard to be relaxed w/the incessant revving of motorcycles & virtual gridlock, although they are trying to calm things down by enforcing their own helmet laws now, I believe. Just plan for the next week, no deal is worth that...We always use vrbo.com, I've not heard of the condo site you mentioned.

I live in Surfside Beach and it is crazy here during Bike Week. The new helmet law is only for Myrtle Beach so that will push more bikers into our area. I have heard talk of the bikers mapping out routes so they can avoid going through Myrtle Beach. I would try to come a different week if I were you.

Thanks everyone. I'm really pushing for the week after bike week but my father may only be able to get the week of bike week off. Ugh!....We've thrown Outer Banks into the mix now. It's a closer drive for us and we'd avoid bike week altogether if we had to go the second week of May. My main concern is weather there in May.

Hi, bwg. Your response is almost a year later than the posts above it, and things have changed in a year. First, here's a link to current Bike Weeks/ Other links take you to the correct web sites for the particular event.

The City of Myrtle Beach made it known last year that bikers were no longer welcome in the city limits without adhering to specific laws. Some of the laws such as wearing a helmet are in court at this time. Whatever the outcome, there will be few bikers in the city. It had, unfortunately, reached a point where bikers overwhelmed the city, and they are trying to get back May for the tourists. HOWEVER, the City of North Myrtle Beach (about 20-25 miles north of the city of Myrtle Beach) is welcoming the bikers, and I'm sure it will be crowded there as well as points south such as Murrells Inlet,)
May is a lovely month. The average air temperature is 81 and the ocean temperature is 69.
I hope this helps.

We were in Myrtle Beach in the third week of May two years ago and plan to go the same week this year. The third week is between the two bike weeks, so you get the tail end of one and the beginning of the other. We had a wonderful time, our resort was right on the beach, so we did not hear bike noise on our balcony. We found it fascinating to see the bikes and riders and they caused no problems to us - we are 60, so not youngsters.
