I was in UK in '93 and read a journalist named Jeremy Clarckson writing : " Spain is the worst country in the world 'cause they kill the bulls and it's so hot . . ." Being from Spain, I felt very very upset, and started thinking why . . . Spain is world #3 in number of visitors, why millions of UK people visit us every year, and so on. IMO one can not trash a place simply 'cause you don't like it. We are grown people who work every $ we make and our choice of going here or there is OURS, not yours. So respect please. If I like a place a lot, I will do my best to return again, even if I need a 18 hour 3 flight trip and to spend well money on it. C'mon, mind your own bussines, fly away where you want and let us do the same ! Thanks amigos

Karens, don't you know by now that minority opinions are not appreciated on this forum? Caution: Post a minority opinion and risk personal attacks and ridicule !

Boils down to this ... we're all different and like different things ... it makes the world interesting. Don't be so judgemental because another person enjoys something that doesn't appeal to you.

To each his own!

What I don't get:

People who take their entire year's vacation in one shot, and post something like this:

"I'm going to Philadelphia for 17 days. What is there to do there?"

LOL.

my rant: travel I just don't get

travelling without an open mind, good attitude and some research. why spend all that time and money only to set yourself up for a bad time?

a bad attitude can turn any paradise into a hell-hole whereas a good attitude can turn any Vegas or Orlando into a dream destination. look on the brighter side and try to seek out the best attributes of each chosen destination and you wont turn out to be "uh_noy"ed like me.

FainaAgain,
I like the Elvis slots I love it when you get a jackpot and he sings LOL
karens,
"of course you don't gamble" might have something to do with your inability to enjoy Las Vegas. I don't know if we would go there more than once if we didn't gamble at least a little. But people still enjoy the shows and restaurants.
Re : Red Rocks, that man might have already been to Red Rock Canyon which can be found in Las Vegas..
You like Cape Cod and Sanibel..both places are fine, but packed with tourists and can be quite boooring.

So I am wondering, what are the places that you enjoy that you "get" that are so different from the many posters here? Perhaps you should branch out, go to Europe? Or even forget the beach one year and go to a city.

I have no travel rants, unless you count the one about people who critisize other posters for the places they enjoy going to.

I get Las Vegas and I still hate it. Cheesy "entertainment", horrendous architecture, casinos full of gambling addicts, and hellishly hot temps .. yuck.

I don't get people who travel to popular overcrowded beaches and tourist's attractions, especially in the summer. I have to spend too much time with co-workers in cramped quarters, and then spend alot of time in city traffic, so the last thing I want to do is go to a place like Vegas, Disney or any city in the U.S.

I can't believe this ridiculous thread is still here. For all of the Las Vegas bashers: Las Vegas gets more than 30 million visitors per year. Can you say that about your hometown? Obviously LV has something to offer. I would be willing to bet the majority, if not all, of the Las Vegas bashers have never ventured beyond the strip. Las Vegas/Henderson has been the fastest growing city in the United States for more than 10 years now. So more than 2 million people disagree with you. Take a trip to the Northwest part of town, I can guarantee you'll be surprised how beautiful it is. My spouse has a very lucrative job here, is very successful and happy at what he does. People do actually live and prosper very well. So, some people hate Las Vegas. Some people still think there should be slavery. People are entitled to their opinion no matter how ignorant. I just hope they realize how backwards they sound.

Cnmiranda, I'm glad you're happy in LV. There's nothing wrong with liking someplace that not everyone else loves. Lots of people dislike NYC, LA and Florida, too.

But to argue that people are "ignorant" because they don't like Las Vegas is a bit extreme, don't you think?
That's what you stated--that some people "hate" LV and some people favor slavery and they're both equally ignorant.

Whooaa.
That's pretty harsh.

And since you're going to push the point so hard, I'll take the opposite view. Las Vegas has very few redeeming qualities. Las Vegas has a no physical beauty whatsoever, is very low on culture (I don't consider casinos and Coca Cola museums and George Carlin to qualify as culture), it has a relatively high crime rate, the cancer incidence in Las Vegas is sky high, it has a heavily blue collar population which would disappear in an instant if the economy there faltered, it has poor schools which aren't being adequately supported due to the growth rate, and if gambling didn't exist neither would LV--not exactly something to be proud of.

.....Which was the whole point of this thread. Posters should not be insulted for saying they don't like a destination. I said I hated LV and I will never go back there. Call it what you want, but there was a thread about Boston,Never again because of how she was treated in the subway. Agree or disagree, she has every right to post and feel that way.

Just because 30 million people visit vegas each year Does NOT make it for everyone. Sorry you felt insulted cnmiranda.

Travleis,
This is the last time I will respond to this thread. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Regarding beauty, Have you ever ventured to Red Rock or Mount Charleston? How about Lake Mead or Hoover Dam? Any large city will have a high crime rate.
Regarding the "high cancer rate", are you talking about Fallon, Nevada? That is not here. My husband is in the healthcare industry and I can assure you LAS VEGAS' cancer rate is the same as anywhere else. When you find statistice to prove otherwise please let me know. Doesn't every other city in the world with more than 2 million people have a "large blue collar" population? What is wrong with being blue collar? That's insulting to hard workers. That is ridicuous. Many large compaines such as Hilton and Citibank (plus many others) have headquartes here since there is no state tax. There is a sigificant retirement population here and the healthcare and construction business is booming. The one thing you are correct about is the poor schooling due to rapid growth. If the Casino industry was gone the town will still flourish. That may have been true 60 years ago but not today. And it is ignorant bash Las Vegas when you don't know a thing about the city. I also notice you didn't offer to say where you live which is not fair.

Regardless, I wish all Las Vegas visitors the best of luck and regret some people don't take the time to really learn about a place before making rude remarks about it.

OK, people, everyone take a deep breath and relax. Can we just agree to disagree? For some, Vegas is fun, glitz, faux-glamour, a bit of sparkly tinsel in the desert, worth the visit. For others, a place to settle down, a land of opportunity. For others, too tacky, too fake, sleazy. I'm in the first camp myself. What's the diff?

Chacun à son goût, right? Follow your own roads, find the places that make you happy, and move on with your life. Don't concern yourself with others' tastes in holiday destinations. Let them go, and you can enjoy your preferred places in peace. And don't rag on each other, OK?!

Out the 50 states I've been to 37 so far and still counting. And fortunately for me I was able to "GET" them. I've always enjoyed my visit to each one of them. Each state is different and wonderful at the same time. I can go back to either one of them over and over and never grow tired of it.
I have an advice for you Karens, start enjoying life!!!

Karens has a point! LV has been parsed to death - always hotels, food, shows, rentals, discounts. Over and over. WDW, by comparison, seems to be showing up here less and less. Perhaps fewer are going. It's self-limiting - a trip there does it for most people.
I think we can probably get a consensus that both are tacky. There really are far better places to visit.

My last reply to this post.

I think it is sad that someone would bash any destination and can't find anything good and fun about a particular place.

As for Vegas, I think the landscape, lights, glitz, and the mountains make for a stunning backdrop. Am I a gambler? No. I also did not participate in everything there is to do in Vegas so I will not make a judgement about the place. What I did see, I liked.

I thing about this thread is the sweeping generalizations of different places based on seeing a small part.

Unless you live in or near Orlando, how could you possibly see it all?

Myrtle Beach is made up of 60 miles of shoreline. Who has seen it all?

About Wildwood, while I have not been there, I did go to Atlantic City and really didn't see what all the bad press is about. Again, I didn't see all of AC but what I did see, I liked.

Take places for what they are, try seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty.

Also depends WHY you're going. I personally don't see the attraction of WDW or LV ... but my 4 yr old daughter likes one and my 64-yr old aunt the other, and if it brings them happiness, I'll go along for the ride!

Lots of crabby people here, that's for sure.
