i don't think that's quite how the coffee maker story goes. it wasn't to brew coffee with...

it was simply that the container carafe was used as a... bedside receptacle.

That's a good use for the carafe too, Suze, maybe you have a separate story of your own, but I wrote that original post and that's how it went!

To describe it better, the person peed into the pot, poured it into the machine, threw in the package of grounds and hit "brew"! That's how they told it...

i didn't realize it was a 1st hand story, i thought we were repeating "urban legends" or hotel legends as it were

;-)

I know it totally sounds like an urban legend but it was a college friend of my husband and I and I have no doubt he did it—just that kind of goofy guy.

And he has hindered the early caffination of my hotel stays ever since hearing the story!! ;-)

On the Snopes website, the story they have that is verified to be true is that some wacko was taking revenge on his office colleagues.

The wacko didn't realize that the security cameras were actually filming him and that's how they caught the guy.

He was fired and charged with assault.

Speaking of worms....
I was in a Rio de Janeiro restaurant eating a delicious fresh salad, when I noticed a 2-inch green worm crawling around on my plate. My husband flagged the waiter and indignantly said, "There's a worm in my wife's salad." The waiter looked at the worm, picked it up with his fingers and wordlessly walked away. I ate the rest of the salad. It probably was organic. No, I didn't get sick.

"Waiter, what's this fly doing in my soup?!"
"Looks like the backstroke."

Once I saw it... was it Candid Camera? Or one of these "dumb criminals" shows? They caught the guy on camera, he was relieving himself in the company's coffee pot.

Marigold, have they charged you an extra fee for protein in your otherwise vegetarian salad?

I would guess that the majority of Fodorites don't get to use transient housing on military bases as us old retired geezers do, but the comments about checking the alarm rang a bell (insert appropriate smiley here). Active duty folks get up EARLY, and they set their alarms to outrageous times like 0330 or 0400 and, being young, they like loud rock music. Need I say more?

On my last vacation I got a wake-up call which I had not requested. I wonder if anybody missed a flight...

When i check in to a hotel room I pretty much resign myself to the realization that I'm going to add my DNA to the germ pool and go about my business.

I never, ever, rely on a wake up call from the front desk.

I was already at the pool bar when SAnParis & wow arrived. By the time all of us at the party leave here we probably won't even be able to find our rooms so the germ infested hotel room for us is a moot point.

Love this thread!
One of the first questions is where is the ice machine for my in room cocktail...room or pool. is that pool heated?
Since most of us are well seasoned travelers, it is funny the things you do as soon as you enter through the doorway...love mdtravels #1 Get rid of the crap..do that ASAP and the flat sheets for the bedspread just to hang on the bed without wondering..
That is why I love to travel..it's always like a Get Smart TV episode..sometimes Seinfeld..
Best.

To all of you who have now made me a paranoid germphobic I would like to say a big EEEEYYWWW. I was really looking forward to going on holiday on Monday, but now I am so grossed out by what I have just read, I want to stay under my own skanky bed covers and hide. (Well they are probably pristine - but as I said I'm now a paranoid germphobic).

Why does American tv have shows like "how filthy is your hotel room"??? why why? who the hell wants to know that? I DON'T. I would like to live in the state of ignorant bliss that I was in prior to reading this post. MDtravel - you are in so much trouble....;-).

The worst thing is, I used to think that American rooms (admittedly 4 or 5 star) were much cleaner than here in London, but I am coming across to NYC so I guess I'm doomed.
