is it ok for a hotel to charge you almost double because its the busy season or the daytona or new years or
etc etc etc! seems to be a double standard.

Personally I would just risk it and if by chance someone from the hotel does say something to you then your reply should be something like 'Oh right, is that what you meant?' Works every time.

It all depends on whether you believe in the law of supply and demand, free-market economics, or not.

I can't believe this discussion is still ongoing. I'm tired of seeing it on the Travel Talk front page. Don't we all have better things to discuss than how/whether to cheat/lie/steal?

To answer Pam above: no
To others: Living in a black-and-white world must be very comforting. So, if someone sneaks a 3d person into a hotel room, that's the path to perdition (and extramarital affairs)? Gimme a break!
The truth is, Franny, you're the only one who can judge yourself and your actions. All those other holy-rollers out there -- who've never walked away from a buffet with an extra roll in their purses -- forget to practice what they preach (and I do mean "preach") Judge not, lest you be judged yourself.

Sort of like-if you are you are the President of the U.S. then it's o.k. to lie under oath, or to have sex in your office with an intern. Or claim to be a minister and have a bastard with an employee and pay her off with funds that are not yours to spend. Or it's ok to lie and say you invented the internet because you were in the house/senate when it was invented. Or if you are from a powerful political family, it's ok to leave your campaign worker to drown while you fail to report an accident for hours and engage in an elaborate cover-up. Or, it's o.k. to appoint your younger brother as Attorney General because you are the President. Or to pardon any unremoreseful criminal that lines your pockets because you are the President. Or to take public property from the White House besacuse you are the President's wife. Or to vandalize the White house because you lost your job in the election. Or to shamelessly plug your political darlings on your TV talk show and violate the the equal access time rule because your produces let you get away with it because you bring in good ratings. Yeah, tell me all your excuses.

...or to use your father's connections to avoid active military service or to get into Yale (thereby sending some poor slob to Vietnam in your place and taking another poor deserving slob's place at an Ivy League school).
Just once, I'd like to see someone talk ethics and judgment without bringing up Clinton or another Democrat. It's over -- move on and start bashing someone else.

If you've paid the double rate, you've paid for the room as far as I am concerned. The hotel does not incur any added expense if you have another person sharing the existing bedding. Just have one or 2 of you check in and enjoy your holiday. You'll more than make up for it when that third person hits the casino in the hotel.

Hey Jim -- the allegation that Bush used his father's influence to get into Yale and avoid the draft pales by comparison to the hypocrisy and criminal behavior of Clinton, JFK, RFK, and Jesse Jackson.

Yo, Sam-I-Am,

Franny asked if it is possible. The answer is yes.

The morality issue was brought up by everyone else. She didn't ask if it was right or wrong. She only asked if it was possible.

If you're at a buffet stuffing it in and your child or grandchild wants some cheese and fruit, do you pay full price for another buffet or just chalk it up to a youngster not eating much and the restaurant can afford it? Same difference.

Franny, let us know how the trip goes ... unless you get hauled off to jail.

Reading this has convinced me that people don't understand that all you have to do is ask.

In the latest example, someone wonders whether you have to buy another buffet dinner if your kid wants a bite of your cheese from the buffet. All you have to do is ask your server. He or she will, 99.9% of the time, say, "Of Course, go right ahead." Then the moral issue vanishes. There is simply no need to sneak around. Ask the hotel. Ask the server. Ask the owner. Just ask, darn it.

Don't you get it, ASK? The reason these people don't want to ask is because they know it is wrong and are afraid that if they ask they will be told it is wrong, then they couldn't plead ignorance. If they didn't know it was wrong to do it in the first place, why would they even hesitate to do it or to ask about it? Follow the advice of some of the others posting -- the hotels are ripping us off, so we have a right to rip them off. Just like, "the government wastes my money, so I'm never going to pay taxes again --they deserve it." Or, my fuel bill is too high, so I'm going to steal from the power company just as soon as I can figure out how to do it.

Sam, I think I get it just fine. But I think people often don't ask because they don't understand that everything is negotiable. Negotiating makes a lot of people uncomfortable. They just need to get over it and be more assertive.

RFK? JFK? Why not bring up the failings of U.S. Grant, too? Interesting that someone would "compare" dishonesties.

My intent was not to compare dishonesties. My intent was to point out that many of our so-called "leaders" have been dishonest and thus make very poor role models. I don't care what you say, when you put yourself in a position of authority, power, or leadership, you have a moral responsibility to set a good example. You should make the effort to set a higher standard for yourself.

We tried it once in a hotel in Door County (3 in a paid-for-2 room). The maid let us know she was on to us by leaving three mints on the pillows, and the hotel just added the extra charge onto the bill at check out. Nothing was ever said to us about it, though. It's likely you won't fool housekeeping for long.

I agree with your thoughts, Texasgirl ("Unfortunately, it seems like more people are subscribing to the 'your rules don't apply to me' theory these days. No, 'getting away' with sneaking a third person into a two-person room isn't going to cause the decline of civilization. But the thinking behind it 'i deserve to do whatever i want' just might.").

I was once near the front of a long line for tickets at the Taste of Chicago. A man walked right up and butted to the #1 position. When a few people in line called him on it, pointing out that they had been waiting before him, he responded, "Hey, you do what you have to do, I'll do what I have to do." Amazing and sad, no?

Comment to "What?"- Last time I heard, "Driving under the influence" was criminal behavior. Or is sex somehow worse than endangering other people's lives where you come from.

why lie? Splitting the cost between three people can't be that bad. If your airfare includes hotel price why risk it and emberass yourself? We travel to vegas quite often and i know i wouldn't want to be embearassed over something like that. Do you realize how many cameras there are in a hotel in Vegas? Pay for three people. If you can't afford it you shouldn't be going to Vegas. You'll spend alot more gambleing than you will for that third person. Do the right thing ! That is why rates continue to go up. People like you try to cheat hotels !!!
