An Alcatraz tour
Fisherman's Wharf
Peir 39
A cable car ride
Chinatown
If you have access to a car and are going to be there multiple days, consider a drive along the coast north of San Francisco.
Drive down Lombard Street (touted as the crookedest street in the world).
I always bring home San Francisco sourdough bread to my friends and neighbors. They love it. (A good place to get this is Fisherman's Wharf).

North Beach..try to have dinner there or at least go later in the evening for a drink or espresso.
Ferry Bldg., at the end of Market St., including the plaza behind the Ferry Bldg. with the view of the SF Bay.
A walk along the Embarcedero.
Union St., with all the lovely shops and cafes.
A walk up to NobHill with a visit to Grace Catherdral.
See a play if there is anything that interest you.
If the weather is conducive have a drink (wine, coffee whatever) in Union Sq., there is a darling Italian cafe at the eastend of the Sq (Stockton St side) with indoor but also lots of outdoor tables. Great for relaxing between walking and fun people watching. They serve lunch also, very good sandwiches.
In Fodor's search box type in Stu Dudley's name..he has so many wonderful suggestions for visitor's to San Francisco, including taking at least one walk sponsered by the SF Library..his wife is one of the docents.
Have fun preparing for your time in San Francisco.

Your welcome niki, and just another thought because you will have your little one with you. At Buena Vista Park (between 4th and 3rd St., on the east side of the Sony Metreon there is the merry-go-round which your little would enjoy. Also a nice park/lawn area if you just need a break from city traffic etc.
