If you're interested in history, take a well-organized city tour. Savannah has a long history and the buildings from times past are spread over a wide area. I was surprised and fascinated.

Since St Patricks Day is on a Friday - and the huge parade starts in AM - you will not be doing any sightseeing on that day. Unless the sights you want to see are drunk and disorderly people. Most of the activity near River Street

Do your sightseeing in the 2 days prior. If you like art, SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) has some interesting galleries. I agree a short history tour - walking or riding - will give you a good overview.

Where is your hotel? We always got one on Bay St on the parade route. I am hoping you have one there. You have someone get up at 6:30 and put your seats out on the route and then take turns baby sitting them. Have a cooler with drinks and snacks. Honestly, we always got a suite with a kitchen because eating out on the day is not easy. We brought casseroles to heat up and lunch meat for sandwiches and a stocked bar. We always had two rooms and it worked out well. You can try to eat out but it will be crazy busy.
River St is ok but crazy busy and we got ticked off when they took the wristband thing all over. Last year we went.

Bonaventure cemetery is a must visit place, go over to Tybee one day.

One of my favorite things I miss about going is the night of the 16th. The bag pipers will gather outside Molly MacPherson's Scottish Pub on Congress and do an impromptu concert of sorts. They are from all over the country and Ireland and always a treat. Great food and drinks there also at Molly's Pub.

Not sure what your sightseeing interests are, but one can easily spend two full days here. There are plenty of historic houses to tour as well as some mostly small to medium sized museums. There's a very recent thread here called "USA, Trip to the south" that has lots of good detail on Savannah's attractions.

Spend some time walking on River Street but be sure to wander the beautiful squares of Savannah's historic district. A trolley tour is a good way to get an overview of the HD and a walking tour is nice for getting more details - but Savannah is easy to walk and explore.

I'd stear clear of the "St. Paddy's Day" advice. Paddy is considered a slur on this soil and there are no Patty/Patrick cops wandering around to correct you in Savannah.

Curious.

"St Patty's" in Boston would at the least earn you some very curious looks, if not a punch in the nose.
