Moving to Charleston
We are being transferred to Charleston, and I would like some suggestions on neighborhoods. I like an urban environment, but I've heard downtown is really expensive. Are there any neat neighborhoods nearby? Is the beach very far? Thanks.

I assume you mean SC so I am going to say, yes the downtown area can be expensive. You could look into some of the other areas like Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Summerville, Daniel Island etc. It really depends on a) where you will be working, b) your budget and c) how far you want to be from the beach and downtown.
Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island are about 15-20 minutes (tops) from downtown Charleston. I make that trip almost every day during our annual trip to Charleston. We always stay downtown and then drive to the beach.
Folly is a little further out. We do not normally go to Folly so I am not exactly sure of the distance but it is not far at all.
I think you need to go for a visit and see what you are interested in and that will give you a feel for the area.

I know Charleston as a visitor, but I would also look at Mt. Pleasant. Close to the beach and not a long drive to town. My first cousin and her husband love living there. However, it really depends as well on where your jobs will be located.
