moving san diego?
hi locals!
I and my wife are planning to move San Diego
in july 2001,and We're looking for a place to live with a budget between $600-$1000
do you think mission valley/fashion valley are safe and let raise a family?
such as place called: La Mirage!
any other recommendations are welcome

Your areas of choice are typically made up of singles and couples with no kids as there are more condos/apts than homes. It is safe, but a concrete haven. Your budget (the high-end) would be able to afford a 2Bd apt or condo.
You mention family, but do not detail any kids so I will assume that kids are planned in the near future. When I first moved to SD (1985), my wife and I lived in Clairmont, not the greatest area, but generally safe, affordable and centrally located. The rent was $600 for a 1 bedroom condo on a canyon with a view of Mission Bay. UTC was our second choice but a little higher in rent.
Now that we have a family we live in the I-15 corridor (Penasquitos, Poway, Carmel Mtn, Rancho Bernardo areas). We live there for affordability, safety, and commute (3 miles), plus the schools have a decent reputation. You will not be able to afford anything decent in your budget in this area. San Diego has a low, low, low vacancy rate and rents (and property values) are escalating very fast.
Recommendations: If you are locating because of a job, get the company to provide you house hunting trips to scout different areas, check your commute, etc. San Diego is huge geographically, so ask your company to pay for corporate housing or a residential hotel for at least 3 months to get a feel for this area, so you don't get stuck in a 1 year lease in an area you do not like. A good rule of thumb is stay north of I-8, unless your job is in Chula Vista or surroundings. There are decent areas south of I-8, but it is very pocketed.

"La Mirage" is consistently voted the number one condo complex in San Diego. It's located not far from Qualcomm Stadium and is adjacent, but much higher than, Interstate 15. I have no idea how much the rents are, but I agree with the previous poster that the vacancy rate in San Diego is very low (less than 1%) and so rents are high.

Dear Helpful,
I don't know why you would be upset with the fact that some people have asked the advice of fellow travelers in relocation questions. Who would be better to ask than other people who appreciate the finer things that cities have to offer. No one said that you need to respond to all postings. If you don't want to be "helpful", feel free to pass up the relocation postings and allow others to get some much needed advice.

We just moved to San Diego in June of 2000. Right now we live in mission valley. The area is very safe and generally the people are high class. However, there are a lot of rowdy college kids (as it is close to SDSU). Also, the rents are much higher than the range you have given - our two bedroom apartment is $1400 a month. A one bedroom at La Mirage would run you over $1200. If you are looking for a food family place to live, I would avoid Clairemont - too ghetto, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach - these areas are packed with college students. To find a place in your budget you will probably have to look at some of the more outlying areas closer to the desert - La Mesa, Tierrasanta and Rancho Bernardo may be good places to look.
