As far as Google maps, recently we had people up to our cabin in the high Sierras and Google maps got them so lost and sent them all over creation. Yahoo maps give much better results, in my experience.

I can't thank you all for the great advise. Everything opinion has been taken into consideration. Thank you allll so much. As for the area that I'm thinking about moving to - yes Oakland is not one of the best areas. I'm thinking about Piedmont, Adams Point, Lake Merritt, Rockridge, Montclair, Berkely and Berkely heights.
As I mentioned, nothing is in stone and nothing is happening yet - but when it does I think I will be more prepared and will be able to make wise decisions and possibly make this move faster then expected.
Thank you again. Hopefully I have some good news soon and I'll let you know how I do.
Be well all.

I haven't read all your answers so I don't know if anyone suggested you have AAA do a triptik for you. They can map it out for safety and convenience of finding somewhere to sleep and stop all the way. I think it would be a once in a lifetime chance to see the country. Amazing scenery and you can bring music or tapes of books or just listen to radio in each region. Just go in summer and drive from 8 to 8, stopping every couple of hours or more if you come across interesting places. You won't have to drive when it's dark and if you can drive in NYC, you can drive anywhere!

Have you asked your friends if any of them would like to go for a road trip, help with driving, chat a bit, and fly back? Or are there any folks (or kids) who go to college on the west coast or even part way who need transportation and would love to help with driving to have a cheap way to go cross country?

ZWHO - thanks for the kind words - Its true - if you can drive in NYC you can drive anywhere - but when I'm driving in the city - its home - I know where I am so there is a comfort there.
Emalloy - I have not asked any friends or family yet. I know that my little brother would love to come for the drive and I have one friend that I know would come as well so it may just happen.
I've just sent an e mail to my car insurance place to see if there is a motor club for me to join and there is so I'm hoping on that. I will look into AAA as well.
Again, you all have been so great and I can't thank you enought for all your great support and ideas. Thank you!!

This is the company we used when we moved from PA to Oregon.
You load your stuff into the trailer. The driver just watches.
You can load your car full of small stuff. Yes, they will load your car in the trailer and you can pack stuff on top, underneath etc. My wife and I drove our 2 cars to Oregon but there was a car and some other things loaded up front in the trailer. Obviously they unloaded and reloaded someplace since the car was not in the trailer when it got to Oregon. Nothing was broken. You only pay for as many feet of the trailer as you use. http://www.upack.com/
If you use Amtrak which I do often recommend, you will be using the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago (overnight) and The California Zephyr from Chicago. Consider spending a night in Glenwood Springs Colorado for a good nights sleep and take the next Zephyr only as far as Sacramento. Rent a car in Sacramento to head to your new place.
I'm glad to answer any Amtrak questions. I've ridden about 25K miles in the last 10 years. I-80 goes from the GW Bridge to the Oakland Bay Bridge. I've driven every foot of it at least once.

We can only hope that the original poster has reached San Francisco by now.

i know this thread is 2 years old but why is it not acceptable to call San Francisso 'Frisco'?
You can blame the old crotcehety, now dead Herb Caen, a newspaper columnist in San Francisco. He is the one who thought no one should use any diminutive form of San Francisco expecially Frisco and San Fran. Some how people listened to him and it became part of the city's culture.
I always thought for a sophisticated town like San Francisco it was a very provincial thought. But all cities no matter how large have their parochial hypersenstivities.
