Mountain retreat?
Hi, I am looking for a great getaway with white water rafting, fishing, hiking horseback riding. What I would love to find - is a log cabin rental or small lodge (upscale) with cabins on a lake with mountain activities and great views for next summer. A small rustic town close so we can go eat/bar get drinks after a day of fishing, hiking or rafting. We will also have our 7 yr old son with us. Just looking for a great outdoors but nice getaway with mountains and lake. We have also looking at dude ranches that has all the activities that we are looking for. We also thought the dude ranch would be good for our son.
Thanks so much for any help.

Hi, we are coming out of Houston and really not sure where we would like to go. Just really looking to get away for a summer outdoors activity with mountains and a lake/river. We have looked at a couplea in place in WY.
Thanks again for any suggestions.

Not on a lake, but this place otherwise meets your specifications:
http://www.freestoneinn.com/
Definitely "upscale". It is close to the "old West" town of Winthrop, Washington (great ice cream and some fun bars/pubs). There is fly fishing on site, and 5* hiking trails nearby (some too difficult for your 7-year old son, unfortunately). They can also set you up for horseback riding. Whitewater rafting is a bit downstream; there is some Class 3 & 4. Here is one outfitter, but if you Google "Methow River rafting" you will see others:

A dude ranch is also a good idea. I've always liked the looks of Wilderness Trails near Durango, Colorado---visited there but haven't found time to go yet.

Enzians suggestion of the Freestone Inn is great. Another place in WA to consider is the Leavenworth area. Not far from Winthrop. We have stayed at various vacation homes in the area, but really like the Eagle Creek Cottage. Just on the edge of town, right on a creek. I think their website is www.eaglecreekcottage.com. There are tons of homes/lodges in the area, and a good website for all that is www.leavenworth.org.
You might also consider the Canadian Rockies. We are headed there again this summer with our kids. Baker Creek Chalets (www.bakercreek.com) near Lake Louise are great, and the area has all sorts of great outdoor adventures.

Grand Lake, Colorado has what you want. It's below Trail Ridge Road, if you want to drive that pretty sumertime route into Rocky Mountain National Park. It's our favorite mountain lake in Colorado, as it's a natural lake, not a reservoir, which sits in a beautiful mountain basin.
For white water rafting I think you'd take a shuttle van for an hour or so, but there's good rafting on the Colorado River near Grand Lake.
The Grand Lake Lodge has a beautiful view of the gorgeous mountain lake, with cabins that are semi-rustic. Other cabins in town, too. I think some people have posted about liking Lemmon Lodge there. We have enjoyed many wonderful dinners at the Grand Lake Lodge, overlooking a sunset on the lake.
Grand Lake is a small town, with a few restaurants, tourist shops, clothing shops, etc.
There's a golf course, renting a boat on the lakes is a blast, horseback riding, lots of hiking, etc.
If you want a dude ranch, there's one down the road toward Granby, called the C Lazy U, which is also nice. Has a pool, activities for kids, horses, nice ranch house for meals, etc. No lake view, though.
Have fun planning your mountain get-away!
