Mountain biking in Creste Butte
My husband and I want to take our 2 teenagers to Creste Butte in early June (2nd week) to go mountain biking, hiking and sight seeing. we are avid outdoors people. The question is this: will the trails still be snowy for biking and where is the best lodging (I love "views"). We've also thought about "setting up " in Durango instead of Creste Butte, but, felt that the "town" of CB had more history. Your thoughts?

It is "Crested" Butte. June should be ok, actually probably gorgeous. NOt much lodging except in the little Victorian town, unless someone on the mountain at the ski area is still open. If you want to "set up," Gunnison is a better choice, only 20 miles away with tons of lodging, and BTW, the awesome Black Canyon of the Gunnison nearby. Plus good access to anywhere you want to go. Have fun.

I'm not sure of the elevation of Crested Butte, but it's not uncommon to get snow in the Rockies until July 4. It's a beautiful spot for your agenda, though. Maybe if Crested Butte has too much snow, you could drive down the road to Gunnison for your activities. It's at a lower elevation, I believe.

Superb location. Prime mountain biking! Prime wild flowers too. You really can't go wrong in June in CB. Sure some chilly temps are possible, as with any place in Colorado. Bring layers. Bring Water. Sunscreen. Views, anywhere you stay in CB has views. CB is a view in itself. Gunnison is towney has college, motels, Wal Mart; CB feels completely like a different world. Good choice.

I'm biased as my family has a place in Crested Butte, but we think it is the most wonderful place in the world. Laid back, friendly charming, you will absolutely love it. If you are into scenery and views, stay there and not Gunnison as someone else suggested.
Crested Butte is a town, it has a delightful main street with lots of cute shops and numerous great restaurants. If you want more casual food, I would also suggest you make the short drive out to CB south to the CB South Tavern, totally old timey colorado feel to it. They have a meal special every night so it's worth it calling out there and asking what the special is for the night. Of course, make sure you check out all the other restaurants in town and your kids would love The Secret Stash. Another good restaurant for teenagers is The Last Steep adn if you are up on the mountain, stop in at The Avalanche.
Since we have a place, I can't recommend lodging, but you could stay on the mountain and rent a condo or at the Grand Lodge i think it is called. You should check out skicb.com for the Crested Butte Mountain resort website for their hotel offerings.
The best thing about Crested Butte is the hiking and biking, we can literally walk out our door and be on a hiking path in 5 minutes with no one on it. Try that in Aspen!
You should contact the Alpineer or the local visitors center and get them to send you a trail map. Crested Butte has tons of biking/hiking trails of lots of varying difficulty. You may want to think about bringing your bikes with you as my nephews rented bikes this summer and i think they ended up being $25 a day. I think we discussed buying some "house" bikes to have around for people to ride after that.
Also the teenagers love Crested Butte bcause they could ride their bikes downtown adn just hang out and it was completely safe. If they needed to, they could take the mountain express back up the mountain and get back home. We heard also after the fact that they hitchhiked back up the mountain a couple of times. Crested Butte is that safe.
You should also check out rsn.com and the Crested Butte cam. It's all aobut skiing now, but the cam op is a rabid mountain biker and works for the resort. I'm sure if you emailed him, he'd before more than willing to connect you with the right people at the resort to get you more info.
I cannot say enough about Crested Butte, you should go. You may encoutner a little bit of snow, but not enough to keep you off the trails. Enjoy it, you may just get hooked.
