Mount Vernon and Alexandria

Can anyone help with advice to visit Mount Vernon and old town Alexandria in one day from Washington DC without a car? Group tours do not appeal to us. We're staying near the Metro red line by the zoo. We'd like to spend the morning at Mount Vernon and in the afternoon go to Alexandria and stay for dinner. It looks like we will need to change from the Metro red to yellow line then take a bus to Mount Vernon. We are open to taking the boats that seem to go to Mount Vernon one way but don't want to spend that much travel time both directions. Once we do get to Mount Vernon what's the best way to reach Alexandria? Are there ever taxis at Mount Vernon or would we have to book one? Any guess as to the cost of a taxi from Alexandria back to our hotel near the zoo?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The Mount Vernon websites gives info on how to get there from DC. You could also check the trip planner at www.wmata.com to see how to get from Mount Vernon to Old Town Alexandria.

The cheapest boat (Potomac River Boat Company) one-way from Alexandria dock to Mt. Vernon is $20/person. That's about what a 1/2 day car rental would run.

I think you want Metro/bus both ways - note the bus leaves from the HUNTINGTON metro station (not the Alexandria King St. station.).

So to get to Mt. Vernon: take the Yellow Line all the way to Huntington and then take the Fairfax Connector Bus #101 to Mt. Vernon.

To get from Mt. Vernon to Alexandria: take Fairfax Connector Bus #101 back to Huntington metro and take the yellow line two stops to the Alexandria King St. station. There is a free trolley that runs from the King St. station all the way to the waterfront or you could just walk (1/2 mile to main old town part of King St. and 1 mile to the water).

Thank you all for the help. Bardo, I think what you've outlined is the plan for us. And Dukey the meatloaf at the Majestic will make DH smile.

You can take the Metro from King St in Alexandria back to your hotel. No need for a taxi.

Or try Taverna Cretaukau for a great ( reasonable) Greek meal. If it is prwtty when you are you can enjoy the nicest patio in Old Town for outdoor dining.
