ADVICE NEEDED - Mount Vernon and old town Alexandria connection

Can anyone help with advice to visit Mount Vernon and old town Alexandria in one day from Washington DC without a car? Group tours do not appeal to us. We can figure out how to get to Mount Vernon. We'd like to spend the morning at Mount Vernon and in the afternoon go to Alexandria and stay for dinner. We thought we could take an Uber back to DC that evening. ADVICE: Once we do get to Mount Vernon what's the best way to reach Alexandria? Can we call a cab or uber or is there a better way? We will be there Fri Oct 20, and no boat services that day. Thank you! Leta

There are bus tours that do both from DC, so look into one of those. The Mount Vernon web site offers a pretty complete list.

Unfortunately, the direct minibus service between Old Town Alexandria and Mount Vernon runs only in the summer. But there are clear instructions on Mount Vernon's web site for how to reach Mount Vernon by Metro and Metro Bus, and you can take the exact same route back to Old Town Alexandria.

We don't want a tour bus. And most tours just give a drive by of Old Town Alexandria. We want to spend the afternoon and evening there and then get back to DC. I have found nothing that says how to do this in October. Are Ubers a good choice there?

I'll go back and look at the Mount Vernon website again to see if it tells how to get from there to Alexandria.

We were staying in downtown DC. We took the Metro to Huntington station and hopped in a taxi to Mt. Vernon.
After our visit we walked out the gate and caught the local bus and got off at Huntington Station. Via the Metro we got off again at King St - Old Town. Spent some time touring some sights and attractions in Old Alexandria, had a lovely dinner then hopped back on the Metro to return to our hotel.

So, in summary, we did a combo of Metro, taxi, public bus.

You can also easily Uber or Lyft to Old Town from Mount Vernon. Just check wait times when you arrive at Mount Vernon and plan accordingly. Or yes, you can call a taxi. The people at Mount Vernon can give you the number.

Then from Old Town, Uber or Lyft again, or take the Metro.

Thank you. We use Uber a lot here and I was hoping it was easy to use there.

Uber from ALexandria to DC is very easy. In fact, that was my first Uber experience. Too bad the boat is not an option. It is a enjoyable trip.
