Traveling to Salem-Gloucester in mid October and staying for 4 days
I plan on visiting Salem and am wondering should I avoid the town on the weekends due to tourism and instead see it during the week?. In mid October in this part of the state are you still seeing the leaves change colors or is it past peak? I will be staying in Gloucester and would like to see some of the surrounding small towns, sites, etc. Any thoughts on any "must see" points of interest. Also I like the thought of exploring some shops which are unique to this area.

Good stuff: Gloucester, including the wonderful Cape Ann museum; Marblehead; Rockport and Annisquam river area; Essex.
Good stuff any time except October: Salem for the historical sites, the beautiful Federal architecture, and the Peabody-Essex Museum, which owns an incredible Chinese house and three antique New England houses, all of which you can tour. The building itself, both the oldest and newest parts, is fabulous, and the collection, based on marine and Pacific trade materials, is world class. The restaurant is very good, and they have nice outdoor seating if it is a good day.
Th,e bad stuff is tha beginning mid-October, the town is subject to crowds of partiers and loonies coming for unauthentic witch sites before Halloween. You may be early enough to avoid these people during the week. The week before Halloween will be impossible. How impossible? You won't be able to get into the parking garage and there will be no on street parking.

Absolutely avoid Salem on weekends. Go midweek early in the day.
In Gloucester is Hammond Castle which is pretty interesting.
Mid October on the coast the leaves may not even be at peak yet. But go a little inland and they will be. Easy to do a day trip to Concord, and even possible to Sturbridge or western Mass (Pioneer Valley/Conn River). Assuming you have a car.
You could also do a day trip up the coast into southern Maine. NH has a short but pleasant coast line (only 7 miles long).
