I wouldn't recommend scooters in Oahu. Waikiki is a congested traffic mess--definitely not the place to be riding scooters. The North Shore is beautiful, but the roads are narrow and winding in parts. Do yourself a favor and rent a car.

I agree with the post above. I didn't see any place around Honolulu or Waikiki that looked safe for tourists to be on scooters.

There are a few places in Waikiki where you can rent Mopeds.

But, I agree with the others, Oahu roads, especially in & around Honolulu/Waikiki are too congested for scooters.

Another vote to NOT rent motorscooters. Very dangerous given the traffic conditions.

The man didn't ask about traffic conditions. Don't reply if you don't know the answer to the question asked.

Try Big Kahuna

Or Hawaiian Style Rentals

The poster did ask, "Suggestions?" Which is pretty open-ended. The suggestion from various posters is that flifer NOT rent a motor scooter.

OK then... I saw scooters for rent at the regular car rental local style places around Waikiki.

We just got back from a week on Oahu and I have to agree that if fifer is staying anywhere near Waikiki than he/she should not rent a motorscooter - the traffic was horrendous and cetainly no condusive to riding on anything with only two wheels.

Another vote not to rent a motor scooter. I get on a bus to work at 6AM and I am dodging cars at this time crossing the street. I live on a very busy road but 6AM? Its not a highway or anything... that kind of puzzles me.

If you still want to go for the rental be especially careful coming around the bend at Makapu lighthouse. Its very narrow and there have been accidents there with mopeds and motorcycles.

I have to laugh about doing yourself a favor and renting a car...that way you can be the one who runs OVER the poor soul on the scooter!

Seems like a consensus. There's enough public transportation or cabs to get where you need to go. I'm a travel agent and I've seen people rent scooters that normally don't ride them, and wreck. That can spoil a vacation in a hurry. The same thing with renting a car in another country. That's bad. More info go to www.albertraley.blogspot.com

Thanks for all the replies. I was asking for my son who is a very, very early riser and wanted to explore before the family got up in the morning. I agree about the Waikiki traffic and now he does too.
