Monterey and downtown Travelodge
My husband and I are going to San fran for a week but would like to see monterey for a couple of days, first. For accomodation, I really do not want to spend over 200, or even mid 170s if I don't have to.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this Travelodge downtown is good? I have read it has been updated and the pics look nice. The rate I found on line was decent. My husband and I were going to stay for a couple of days and see Monterey and were looking for a reasonably priced place, comfortable, cozy.
I think I read that the rooms do not have bathtubs, is this true? Everything else seemed to sound fine.
Thanks,
Deb

Is there a reason you want to stay in Monterey? I always recommend Carmel over Monterey. My family stayed at the Best Western recently and it was great. The rooms were under $100 and it had a fireplace, bathtub, heated pool and breakfast!

And I prefer Monterey over Carmel
It is really a matter of taste though.
Carmel has a beautiful beach, but the upscale shops and galeries just aren't my style. I like Monterey for the history, the harbor, the walking/biking trail along the bay, the variety of mid-scale restaurants, etc. Pacific Grove is between Carmel and Monterey - has a small town feel to it, great rocky coastline, nice walkable downtown.
My husband and I just got back from a weekend in Monterey - we stayed at the Portola Hotel, which is right between downtown and the wharf. I got a rate of about $145/night through Expedia and it was a great place to stay.

Oh I guess I forgot to tell you that tid bit of info.
We would be going at the end of June, so high season and all the places I have been looking at in Monterey as well as carmel are well over 200 a night.
xtravelbug: No reason to stay in Monterey, one thing we want to go to is the aquarium. So its not necessary to stay there, we will have a rental car.
November moon: At the portola, did it have a bathtub and do you have to pay for parking?
Mlgb: what is nice about Pacific Beach, over the others?
Thanks, everyone. I agree I could probably find something better than travelodge but so far have not had any luck at that time anyway.

I like PB for the small-town ambience and some good neighborhood cafes like Red House Cafe and Toasties, and for proximity to Asilomar State Beach. The lodging and parking situations are less intense than in Carmel, but it's certainly close enough to either Monterey or Carmel to visit.

Our room at the Portola Hotel did have a tub and parking was $15/night.
Summer time is the high season, but if you find something decent in your price range and can make a cancelable reservation, then you can keep an eye out for a better deal. If it looks like a hotel isn't going to fill their rooms, they cut prices. You may be able to snag a deal.
Pacific Grove (not Beach) is another great option - figured you'd need the correct name for searches though
Regardless of what town you choose, they are all close enough together that you can easily visit the other towns.

I agree the Pacific Grove is a great option as well.
Carmel reminds me a a small European town. Lots of art galleries, cafes, restaurants and shops. There are also 2 nice beaches. Parking really should not be an issue as majority of inns have little parking lots free of charge.
