Montauk Insight

Hi,

I am travelling to Montauk this August for two months with a girlfriend. We are going to be looking for jobs as well as housing for this time period. I know this is the end of the season.. does anyone have any suggestions or insight?

Thanks!!

I can't say for Montauk, but I can say generally that the loss of employees from the limits on the H2B visa program for overseas seasonal workers is causing problems in every resort area on the East Coast. Since the season in Montauk is unlikely to end before mid-October, if you can wait tables or make beds and are RELIABLE, you are likely to be able to find work. There may be more interesting jobs on charter boats etc but YOU HAVE TO PASS A DRUG TEST before you can be employed. If you are not a doper and like the water (your screenname suggests you might) this is another possibility.

Agree with Ackislander. Montauk has typically been loaded with Irish students doing summer jobs from hotels and motels to restaurants to parking lots and ferry terminals. Depends on who you are and what you want to do. Housing is a serious serious problem for workers. I think it's easier to find a job than to find affordable housing. What is it you'd like to do? I spend a lot of time nearby.

Thanks for the info!! Working on a charter boat sounds really interesting! Drug test won't be a problem. I am definitley a water person as I grew up on Maui. I am bringing my surfboard with me. I run my own small business booking vacation rentals on Maui.. it is internet based so I just need a few hours a day to tend to that. Making some good money would be great...As far as housing, would you suggest just waiting till I get there?

If you're talking about working on a charter fishing boat, here's a list of boats in Montauk. Why not phone some of them. You might ask if they know about housing too.

There's also a link there for marina info if you want to check into working at the marinas.

I think it will be easier to find housing in Sept. than in August. If you are both strong surfers, I would imagine you might find jobs teaching surfing which has become really really popular. There's a new "hip" hotel opened this year called Surf Lodge.
