Has anyone ever been snorkeling in Moloki Crater? If so what is your opinion of this activity?

I thought is was great. The water was a little murky the day we went and there were lots of boats there. I have been to a lot better places to snorkel, but how many times to you get to snorkel in a volcano?!!

Unless you are fond of large groups of people, I would avoid the snorkel boats to Molokini. There are some small scuba boats that run out of Keihi, that will take beginner or certified divers, and those have small groups, and get to Molokini before the big snorkel boats. The big boats tend to be fairly crowded and several show up at the crater at the same time so the water can get crowded as well. There are plenty of places to snorkel around Maui without paying the price of a snorkel trip, and you can see just as many and as colorful marine life.

But thats just my opinion, and I do not like crowds.

I agree with Spokaneman. I went once and it was way too crowded and we really didn't see that many fish. The water was so murky from all the boats that bring probably over a thousand snorkelers there per day.

I would go into Maui dive shop in Keihi and have them direct you to some great sites you can get to from the shore.

We did some great snorkels and saw turtles, dolphins, and tons of beautiful fish. None of these were seen at Molokini. Save your money for something else.

You know we went on a blue water rafting trip once and it was the best. I actually think it was called "Blue Water Raft" or something like that. It was a great trip and we went to the caves and Turtle Town and a couple other great sites what were located in places where the big boats can't get to.

I think the owner was "John" and it was cool because since it was his boat, we could stay out til he wanted to come in. So we ended up staying out 1.5 hrs longer. That was worth every cent and more.

After many trips to the islands, we have discovered that the best way to get to a lot of good snorkel sites is to rent sea kayaks. They are very stable and provide excellent mobility assuming the water is farily calm. And a shoreline paddle is a great way to spend a few relaxing hours.

Rentals are relatively cheap.

We went and didn't think it was worth it. We took the sunset tour (it was cheaper and sounded romantic) and the water was SO CHOPPY that everyone was throwing up. I thought I was going to die out there. The crew circled to find a good spot, but it was so choppy that it would have been suicide to go in there. Honestly, it was the worse tour of my life, even though we love Hawaii. If you do choose it, go with the morning trip. I personally think getting your own snorkel gear, and just swimming out and looking down suffices. Have fun, though!

Incredible crowded, even though we went very early, and the smell of exhaust took all pleasure out of the trip. Water clarity was nice, though didn't see a lot of fish (that's just luck of the draw).

Part of the problem is the water at Molokini is fairly deep, except very close to the rocks, so the fish tend to be deeper than you can easily see with just snorkel gear. Shallow water around reefs is much better. And you are right about the exhaust fumes, I had forgotten about that.
